Abstract: The success of breeding programs for ornamental plants such as purslanes (Portulaca spp.) is
closely linked to the correct identification of ploidy levels. Polyploidization is a technique that
generates new genetic combinations and phenotypic variations, making it useful in the
improvement of Portulaca spp. due to their ornamental, medicinal, and nutritional value. This
study aimed to determine the ploidy level of Portulaca spp. accessions by counting the number
of chloroplasts per guard cell, providing support for breeding programs of the species. Leaf
samples from 15 genotypes cultivated in a greenhouse were collected and analyzed under an
optical microscope (40×). Three stomata from each of five random fields of the leaf were
analyzed, and the data were subjected to ANOVA, the Scott–Knott mean test, and Tocher
clustering. The observed means varied widely, from 4.93 to 24.65 chloroplasts per guard cell,
indicating the presence of different ploidy levels, ranging from diploids to hexaploids. Analysis
of variance confirmed significant differences among genotypes (p < 0.001). Tocher clustering
classified the accessions into four distinct groups and revealed high genetic divergence between

the most contrasting accessions (PU0010 with 24.65 chloroplasts and PU001 with 4.93). Broad-
sense heritability was high (98.56%), indicating strong genetic control of the trait. The results

confirm that chloroplast counting is an efficient primary tool with high selective accuracy
(99.3%), useful for selecting genotypes and guiding crosses for the subsequent development of
promising hybrids with desirable characteristics such as vigor, resistance, and ornamental value.

Abstract: Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is an autoimmune disorder
characterized by the premature destruction of erythrocytes. This destruction may
occur directly in the circulation, due to the action of immunoglobulins and the
complement system, resulting in intravascular hemolysis, or extravascularly, when
sensitized cells are recognized and removed by macrophages of the mononuclear
phagocyte system. The process results in severe, rapidly progressing anemia, often
accompanied by lethargy, pale or icteric mucous membranes, splenomegaly, and
exercise intolerance. Thromboembolism is the leading cause of death in affected
dogs. This report aims to describe a case of primary IMHA in a two-year-old male
Pitbull dog weighing 25 kg, treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal
University of Paraíba in July 2024. The patient presented clinical signs consistent
with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, which was confirmed by complementary
tests and the therapeutic response. The animal was monitored for 21 days, with
weekly follow-ups, showing a satisfactory clinical response, progressive
improvement, and full recovery by the end of the period. This case highlights the
importance of early diagnosis and appropriate management of this condition.

Abstract: This research aimed to identify the autonomous study and learning strategies used by

high school students in the discipline of Biology. Developed through an exploratory-
descriptive approach with a qualitative-quantitative nature, the study was conducted

with 89 students from the three grades of high school in a public school in Paraíba,
using questionnaires as the main data collection instrument. The results revealed a
significant evolution in the use of study strategies throughout the school trajectory. In
the first grade, only 34% of students reported using specific methods and techniques,
while in the third grade this percentage reached 59%. Among the most mentioned
strategies were video lessons, summaries, mind maps, systematic note-taking
(fichamentos), exercise solving, and the Pomodoro technique for time management.
An increase in the sophistication and diversification of these tools was observed as the
grades advanced, with third-grade students demonstrating greater familiarity with
strategies such as mind maps and time management methods. A preference for digital
resources was identified, especially the internet, whose use progressively increased
(32% in the 1st grade to 54% in the 3rd grade). The research also detected some
student learning difficulties regarding the Biology discipline, such as content
comprehension, memorization, and maintaining attention. As a pedagogical
intervention, an educational video demonstrating specific study methods and
techniques that can be used by students in their study routines was produced and
made available to the research participants. It is concluded that there is an urgent need
to implement, from the initial grades of high school, systematic programs that teach
effective learning strategies, aiming to develop student autonomy and improve
academic performance. It is recommended that future research establish causal
relationships between the use of specific study methods and techniques and the
improvement of academic performance in Biology, in addition to investigating the
effectiveness of different strategies for specific contents of this discipline.

Abstract: The advancements in diagnostic techniques have rendered cardiovascular pathologies more prevalent in
veterinary practice. Fetal development involves the formation of aortic arches for circulation, which
must involute after birth to establish the great vessels. However, a failure in this process results in
vascular ring anomalies, with Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA) being the most common in dogs and
cats (accounting for approximately 95% of cases). PRAA causes esophageal compression, leading to
regurgitation in puppies following weaning and the introduction of solid foods, resulting in subnutrition
and an increased risk of aspiration pneumonia. The recommended treatment is surgical intervention,
which, if performed promptly after diagnosis, carries a favorable prognosis, often resulting in significant
improvement or cure, with the esophagus typically regaining normal function. Although invasive, the

procedure is necessary, as there is no clinical cure for PRAA. This study reports the case of a 4-month-
old Pitbull female dog that underwent corrective PRAA surgery. The patient showed a decrease in

regurgitation; however, a complete regression of the esophageal dilation did not occur due to the time
interval between the onset of clinical signs and surgical resolution. This highlighted the importance of
anatomical knowledge, rapid diagnosis and immediate surgical intervention to improve the quality of
life of patients affected by this disease.
