Autor(es): Ribeiro, João Simões
Abstract: This study analyzes the presence of mysticism in Frei Damião de Bozzano (1898–1997) in light
of the philosophy of William James (1842–1910), especially his concepts of mystical
experience and religious pragmatism. The objective was to examine evidence of mysticism and
the practical results of religiosity in the life and work of Frei Damião, according to the Jamesian
conception of religious experience. The theoretical foundation is primarily based on The
Varieties of Religious Experience, which describes the nature of individual religious experience
and the four characteristics of mystical experience—ineffability, noetic quality, transiency, and
passivity; and on Pragmatism, which emphasizes experience and action as fruits of faith. The
methodology was qualitative, relying on bibliographic research and case study, with content
analysis of the data. The results indicate experiences of Frei Damião that approximate Jamesian
mysticism: difficulty in expressing intimate experiences, demonstrations of intuitive knowledge
(such as predictions of illnesses), and an attitude of passivity and obedience to faith, although
marked by controversies in his opposition to Protestantism. It is concluded that James’s
perspective reinforces the understanding of Frei Damião as a mystic, since his concepts of
personal religion and mystical experience resonate with the friar’s life. Furthermore,
pragmatism values the fruits of faith, observable in the spiritual and social benefits attributed
to him, reaffirming his place as an expression of popular Catholicism and broadening the
understanding of his legacy.

Abstract: The following work aims to offer a historical and conceptual analysis of the development of
Buddhism in Tibet, with emphasis on the Kagyu tradition. It begins with the tantric origins in
India, a fundamental and essential for the consolidation of Vajrayana Buddhism, and follows
its adaptation and roots in Tibetan culture. The study highlights the relevance of the
Mahasiddhas, yogui masters who brought tantric practices that gained momentum between the
8th and 12th centuries CE, they realized the diterct experience of the mind (Buddha state) and
shaped Indian and Tibetan spirituality. Among these masters, figures such as Tilopa, Narops,
Marpa, Milarepa, and Gampopa are viewed as pillars of the Kagyu Lineage, whose practices,
such as the “Six Yogas of Naropa” and “Mahamudra” remain central to this tradition. The
research also examines the transmission of the Shangpa Kagyu and Karma Kagyu lineages,
important school within the tradition. Beyond the historical and spiritual trajectory os the Kagyu
school, the social-cultural role of Tibetan Buddhism is analyzed, showing how it became an
essential element of Tibetan Buddhism is analyzed, showing how it became na essential element
of Tibetan identity and how it expanded to the West, especially in Brazil. In this way, the
research seeks to demostrate how tantric foundations, the figures of the Mahasiddhas, and the
transference of lineages contributed to the expansion and pemanence of the Kagyu tradition in
Asia in the global context.

Autor(es): Silva, Edizio Cruz da

Abstract: This paper presents a study of the Tabajara Indigenous people of Paraíba in the 21st century,
focusing on their religious, social, and cultural practices. It aims to analyze how religious,
social, and cultural practices occur in the context of the Tabajara Indigenous people today.
Spirituality stands out as the central axis of community life, guiding social relations, rituals,
and the preservation of ancestral memory. These religious practices keep traditions alive and
also strengthen resistance to the threats posed today. The research explores the cultural
resilience of the Tabajara, who, despite the pressure of acculturation and external influences,
maintain their religious practices, such as the Toré and the use of medicinal plants to cure
illnesses. It is based on authors such as Barcellos and Barcellos (2024), Callou (2018),
Grünewald (2008), Reesink (2000), Resende (2023), Silveira (2018), Simas (2023), Soares et
al. (2023), Krenak (2019), Moraes (2024), Zannone (2011), among others. Religious
practices, often associated with the struggle for territorial preservation and the autonomy of
indigenous lands, reflect a continuous effort of affirmation and resistance in the face of the
historical and political difficulties faced by these people. The approach is qualitative and uses
bibliographic and descriptive research. Emphasis is placed on the work of women in religious
practices, demonstrating their importance in maintaining social and spiritual cohesion within
the villages. It is concluded that it is through resistance that the Tabajara keep their religious
and cultural manifestations alive, above all, reaffirming their identity and fighting to have
their territory demarcated.

Abstract: his study analyzes body suspension as a ritualistic and spiritual practice of a subjective nature,
situating it within the contemporary context and examining the cultural and historical
dimensions of body modification practices. The research begins with the understanding of the
body as a territory marked by symbolic disputes, highlighting how the domestication of the
body was central to the civilizing project in Brazil, leaving historical marks on the individual.
By revisiting archaeological and anthropological records, it becomes evident that body
modification practices have appeared across different peoples and time periods, revealing their
persistence as a symbolic language of identity and social belonging. In the contemporary
setting, body suspension emerges within artistic and spiritual circuits. More than an aesthetic
practice, suspension is understood as a ritual gesture that reinscribes meaning onto the body
through collective environments and the sensory intensity of the act, establishing new forms of
perception and existence for the subject.
