Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the nutritional value of commercial foods
available on the Brazilian market and their effects on the health of Lionhead rabbits.
Twenty-four (24) adult rabbits aged 4.5 ± 1.81 years, of both sexes, with an average
body weight of 1.2 ± 0.92 kg, were admitted. Four (4) dietary treatments were
considered: RSP, where the animals received Super Premium feed (n = 6); RP,
where the animals received Premium feed (n = 6); RPF, where the animals received
Premium feed and hay ad libitum (n = 6); and REF, where the animals received
production purpose feed and hay ad libitum (n = 6). The diets were fed for 80 days.
The following health parameters assessed were hematological variables
(hematocrit, globular volume, hemoglobin and platelets), lymphocyte count,
biochemical panel (AST, GGT, urea, creatinine, triglycerides, total cholesterol and
albumin), urinary parameters (urinary density and pH), dental parameters
(assessment of growth rate and attrition of incisor, pre-molar and molar teeth); and
determination of the total tract apparent digestibility coefficients of the nutrients in
the diets, through total faeces collection. The health parameters were not influenced
by the dietary treatments (p > 0.05). The apparent digestibility of DM, OM and EE
did not differ between the dietary treatments (p > 0.05). The RCF feed had lower
digestibility (p < 0.001) of ENN, CP, EE and CE compared to the other treatments,
while the RSP feed had higher apparent digestibility of FB. The bromatological
analysis of the feeds showed that the BF content declared in the Production purpose
feed was uncomplient, with the analyzed BF content being higher than the maximum
indicated in the guaranteed levels on its label. The chemical composition of the other
feedstuffs was in line with the declared guaranteed levels, although they had CP and
CF contents that differed from the ideal range considered for the species so far. In
general, the nutritional value of food intended for production was lower than that of
food intended for pet rabbits, which in general had higher digestibility. The impact of
feed from different commercial segments on the health parameters of rabbits was
considered minimal under the conditions of this study. Hay supplementation seems
to have affected the animals in a positive and recreational way, with a low impact on
the use of nutrients in the premium food, but it seems to have been beneficial when
associated with low-fibre home-bred food, providing dental wear comparable to high
fibre super premium food. For more in-depth conclusions, long- term studies and a
larger sample of commercial foods for pet rabbits are needed.

Abstract: This study investigated the viability, isolation, and cultivation of exfoliated cells from the
feces of Neotropical deer, proposing a non-invasive method for cellular analysis and future
applications in animal conservation. Fecal samples were collected and subjected to different
storage conditions, being kept at room temperature (27°C) and refrigerated (4°C) for periods
of 0h, 1h, 4h, 6h, 12h, and 24h. The objective was to assess the impact of these conditions on
the number and viability of exfoliated cells, considering time as a determining factor for cell
integrity. After cell isolation, viability tests were performed using trypan blue and fluorescent
dyes such as propidium iodide and acridine orange to distinguish viable, apoptotic, and
necrotic cells. Statistical analysis was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design
(CRD), evaluating the effects of time and storage condition factors on the dependent variable.
Cells isolated using the Percoll gradient method were cultured in a supplemented DMEM
medium. The cultivation was carried out in 96-well plates and maintained at 37°C and 5%
CO₂, with media changes every two days. The results revealed that time had a significant
effect on cell viability, while the storage condition factor had a smaller effect. The highest
means of viable cells were observed at the initial times of 0h and 1h, with a progressive
reduction over 24 hours, especially at room temperature. In contrast, samples stored under
refrigerated conditions showed a milder decrease in viability. Regarding cell cultures, a high
contamination rate was observed, resulting in the loss of five out of six cultures. However, in
one culture, cells remained viable for up to 120 hours, demonstrating the feasibility of the
method for future molecular and cell culture analyses. Thus, the proposed method could be a
viable alternative for cellular studies in wild animals, avoiding invasive procedures and
enabling population health monitoring. It is concluded that the isolation and cultivation of
exfoliated cells from deer feces are possible and effective, but protocol improvements are
necessary to increase the success rate of cell isolation and, consequently, cultures.

Abstract: The research aimed to develop an efficient method for collecting and characterizing
semen from snakes kept in captivity, contributing to the conservation of endangered
species. Fifteen male snakes housed in zoos in the state of Paraíba were used.
Physical parameters such as color and appearance, chemical parameters such as pH,
and microscopic parameters including motility, vigor, concentration, and sperm
morphology were evaluated. The method demonstrated high efficacy, yielding positive
results even in species with dense musculature, expanding the understanding of their
reproductive peculiarities. The analyzed spermatozoa showed high quality, with
progressive motility above 70% in most samples and a high percentage of normal cells.
The results reinforce the importance of proper management and the application of
biotechnologies in assisted reproduction and species conservation. This study
provides valuable insights for improving reproductive techniques, as it details a new
semen collection method for snakes that can be used in both in situ and ex situ
conservation, highlighting the essential role of science in mitigating the impacts of
human activities on wildlife.

Abstract: Intoxications occur with great frequency in the medical clinic of small animals. Animals can
accidentally become intoxicated when, without human supervision, they ingest toxic products
for them or even when the guardian, without prior knowledge, offers improper food or
wrongly administering medication, causing toxicosis. Marijuana is a plant used as a narcotic
substance, as well as in medicinal treatments. Due to possible access, pets can come into
contact with the plant and become intoxicated, requiring urgent medical intervention. For the
effective evaluation of the use of drugs for this purpose, it is necessary to prove intoxication
by the causative agent, using diagnostic tests for this purpose. The aim of this study was to
evaluate the presence of metabolites that indicate marijuana intoxication in dogs that were
admitted to urgent and emergency care at a veterinary clinic in the city of João Pessoa.
Patients with a history of intoxication were treated, presenting clinical signs suggestive of
intoxication by marijuana, with no exclusion of race, age or gender. The consultations were
carried out from September 2021 to May 2022, totaling nine months of research. Initially,
anamnesis was carried out with the tutor and the treatment of clinical signs according to the
general condition of the patients. Regardless of the source of intoxication, biological samples
were collected for hematological and urinary tests. A rapid test was used to detect the
presence of THC metabolites after 6 hours of hospitalization. Patients were classified
according to the result of the chromatographic test as “negative/controls” and “positive”.
Blood and urine samples were collected. Hematological analysis evaluates the presence or
absence of anemia, leukocytosis or leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, serum biochemistry
evaluates liver and kidney biomarkers. The urinalysis evaluated color, density and PH, where
no alteration had the alteration altered with marijuana intoxication. The chromatographic
evaluation for the detection of THC metabolites in the urine, carried out with the objective of
confirming marijuana intoxication in dogs, using the PocT COC/THC test Assure Tech
Westlake Eco Zone/China (Registration MS ANVISA80885650015/ Minas Gerais- Brazil)
proved to be effective.
