Abstract: This dissertation aims to attest the implicit affinity of Richard Rorty's neopragmatism with rhetoric. The main goals of this work are: to contextualize and define rhetoric, highlighting the mistaken separation between rhetoric and philosophy, preceded by the anachronistic assimilation between the Sophists' teaching of logos and the rhētorikē created by Plato, correlated with the Sophists' devaluation in contrast to the development of philosophy; to verify the relationship between post-positivist analytical philosophy, and the influence of the linguistic and linguistic-pragmatic turns on the resurgence of rhetoric in 20th century philosophy, and that the radicalization of this movement in analytical philosophy by Rorty's neopragmatism is succeeded by an implicit rhetorical turn.

Abstract: The general objective of this work is to examine some discussions on virtues and the
problem of relativism in the contemporary philosophical debate. In this sense,
considering that, for moral relativism, different cultures incorporate different virtues,
the purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate how relativist ethics becomes a
problem for Aristotelian virtue ethics, which seeks to offer an objective and universal
foundation for human virtues. Therefore, the research aims to answer to what extent
human virtues depend on objective foundations of human nature. Thus, the goal is to
elucidate the arguments of some of the main neo-Aristotelian proponents of
contemporary virtue ethics, such as Philippa Foot and Rosalind Hursthouse, in an
attempt to respond to the problem of moral relativism. In view of this, these authors
argue that it is possible to integrate morality into a naturalistic perspective, in order to
demonstrate that it is grounded in the nature of human beings, and that this fact is
sufficient to justify a universal and objective ethics, making clear that the exercise of
virtues does not depend on contingent and subjective factors.

Autor(es): Prima, Davi Matheus Moura Tito da Cunha

Abstract: This work addresses the limits of the plurality of doctrines and ways of life in a democratic
constitutional state, based on John Rawls's political liberalism. It examines the concept of
reasonableness and the criterion of reciprocity used by Rawls to justify the exclusion of
doctrines considered irreconcilable with democratic principles, taking into account the need to
preserve reasonable pluralism and political stability. Along this path, it analyzes the notions of
the political conception of the person, overlapping consensus, public reason, and the
assumptions of an ideal theory of justice. The work considers the critiques put forward by
feminist theorists such as Carole Pateman, Susan Okin, and Marilyn Friedman, aiming to
investigate the role of Rawlsian theory in the face of gender inequalities. In response to these
objections, Elizabeth Brake’s proposal of agnostic neutrality, based on epistemic criteria, is
evaluated as an alternative that reconciles political liberalism with feminist demands. The
study defends the hypothesis that, despite contemporary objections, Rawls’s political
philosophy remains relevant for thinking about the delimitation of doctrines and ways of life
in a constitutional democracy.

Abstract: This dissertation aims to investigate Hannah Arendt's philosophical and political views through
her comprehension of the banality of evil in relation to the faculty of thinking. Faced with the
unprecedented evil perpetrated by the nazifascist totalitarian regime, tradition was unable to
guide us in face of the moral catastrophes of the twentieth century concerning the nazi
totalitarian regime. In Arendt's analysis regarding the desolation of the public sphere, which
provides us with the political discourse required to take action on a global scale, man has lost
his ability to share those thoughts in a plural way. Since the thinker's attendance at the nazi
Adolf Eichmann's trial, Arendt began to establish a direct line between the faculty of thinking
and the practice of evil. Throughout this work, we will be able to realize that Arendt didn't
bequeath us rules of conduct initially established, but instead, she left us the prospect of
understanding our time as long as we don't deprive ourselves of our spiritual faculties that are
fundamental to illuminate the future.
