Abstract: This work invites a reflection on the teaching of mathematics in two public schools in
the municipality of Alagoa Grande, Paraíba, during the COVID-19 pandemic between
the years 2020 and 2021. The main objective of this study was to identify which were
the main difficulties encountered in teaching and learning Mathematics by teachers in
remote teaching and which tools are used by them. The interest in developing the
research work arose due to the challenges and difficulties that were presented to
students and teachers during the period of school closures and social distancing.
During this period, classes were suspended in person, teachers had to reinvent
themselves professionally so that classes continued to be taught and students
remained attentive, interested and motivated. And in this context of the pandemic,
mathematics teachers used several resources so that remote classes could provide
the same quality as face-to-face classes. The methodology adopted in the study was
of an exploratory nature of the qualitative research type, carried out with four
teachers who teach mathematics classes in public schools in the municipality of
Alagoa Grande, involving Elementary School and High School. The field research
used semi-structured interviews to support our considerations. Through the analysis
of the data and the proposed discussion, the results indicated many difficulties and
adaptations that teachers and students face at this time of pandemic, such as the
lack of technological apparatus to support classes, lack of internet in schools and
lack of knowledge of applications. made available by the participants. In view of this,
we propose a didactic sequence that will allow a better structuring of didactic
activities for teaching mathematics. Therefore, we concluded that the investigated
school was not prepared for a moment of crisis, bringing to light the need for a closer
look at the school environment in terms of technological and structural issues of
institutions in our state.
