Grounded in the Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School, it examines how the Culture Industry produces cultural goods that reproduce dominant ideologies to establish hegemony. Methodologically, the study is situated within Social and Cultural History, treating comic books as both historical sources and objects of study. The research explores the emergence of the "Marvel Formula" in the 1960s, analyzing characters such as the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, and Iron Man as archetypes of contemporary tensions, including the nuclear threat, the Space Race, and the American Way of Life. Furthermore, it performs a detailed case study of the series Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos, highlighting its role as a tool for war propaganda and political revisionism, particularly regarding the Vietnam War and the intentional omission of the Soviet Union from Allied history. This title arises in the middle of the Middle Kingdom (c. 2040-1640 bCE) and is signed throughout the New Kingdom (c. 1550-1070 bCE). From research conducted during the Monitoring of Ancient History I (UFPB), the Scientific Initiation and discussions at the ANKH - Research and Teaching Group of Ancient Egypt (CNPq/UFPB), which gave us theoretical input and access to historical sources such as literature and iconography, based on the historiography of the ancient Egyptians. Departing from the question of how a contemplative religious order became embedded in the agrarian and legal mechanisms of the colonial world, the research examines petitions, official rulings, and property records preserved in the Livros do Tombo of the Monastery of Saint Benedict of Paraíba, alongside Benedictine chronicles, and compares these materials with contemporary cartography. The findings demonstrate that the patrimony did not emerge spontaneously or on strictly devotional grounds, but rather through a systematic strategy that combined grants by local authorities, purchases with the Order’s own resources, public auctions, and judicial settlements. This enabled the monks to control strategic areas within the urban nucleus of Filipeia de Nossa Senhora das Neves and, above all, extensive rural lands along the floodplains of the Paraíba, Miriri, and Mamanguape rivers. By securing water resources, fluvial routes, and fertile lands, the Order articulated itself with the sugar economy, incorporating cane-growing holdings and mills, and establishing a material base dependent upon enslaved labour – thereby revealing a substantive gap between the Rule and the everyday practices of colonial administration pursued by the monks in Paraíba. The study also traces conflicts over possession and mechanisms of legal legitimation, showing how the Benedictines operated within the interstices of the royal system to expand and defend their rights, including in the aftermath of the Dutch incursions, when patrimonial losses intensified and subsequent disputes over the restitution of real property became more frequent. The study concludes that Benedictine territorial expansion in Paraíba functioned as an instrument of power, financial autonomy, and political intervention, integrating the Order into the dynamics of occupation and consolidation of the local colonial space. This research develops from the sertões as conceptualized by Ana Maria Veiga, understood here as places distant from major urban centers where other forms of knowledge and narratives persist. As an investigation, it also proposes to engage with the counter-colonial movement of Nêgo Bispo by discussing practices of healing, health promotion, well-being, counseling, herbal teas, and blessings developed in these places considered non-central. I also draw on the thought of Durval Muniz de Albuquerque Júnior when addressing the construction of stereotyped imaginaries that associate the Northeast solely with hunger, drought, and lack. Considering the rezadeiras as women healers, as argued by Veiga, I ground these discussions in decolonial studies, Global South feminism, and the reflections of Black intellectuals in order to think through these questions. Regarding the interviews, I draw on oral history through the works of Marta Rovai and Alessandro Portelli, on Vânia Vasconcelos’ concept of feminismo aprendente, on Ana Veiga’s proposal to decolonize through sertanidades, and on Leda Maria Martins’ concept of spiral temporality. The knowledge of sertanejo women healers is crossed by colonization and coloniality; nevertheless, it is fundamental for understanding part of Brazil’s history, as well as its limits and possibilities.
