Abstract: The architecture of the past endures in the urban landscape as a spectre, neglected in the collective historical&#xD;
consciousness. These buildings, as historical witnesses, manifest as phantom façades -vestiges of continuities&#xD;
and ruptures that haunt the city. This research investigates eclecticism in the architecture of João Pessoa, capitalof&#xD;
Paraíba, from the late 19th century through the first half of the 20th century. In this period of urban modernization,&#xD;
this architectural language, based on compositionalfreedom and stylistic polyphony, materialized the republican&#xD;
ideology, encompassing more than a thousand identified examples. Despite its relevance, local eclecticism&#xD;
receives only briefand superficial mentions in the literature, being recurrentlyglimpsed through a single analytical&#xD;
lens. In addition to the scarcity of documents, there is a visible process of neglect that jeopardizes the physical&#xD;
integrity of this built heritage.This dissertation's primary objective is to conduct a historical-morphological reading&#xD;
of this eclecticism. The study focuses specifically on buildings situated within and adjacent to the city's original&#xD;
nucleus during the aforementioned research time frame. By (re)constructing the formal trajectory of this language,&#xD;
it aims to (re)examine its reception and varied forms of representation in the city. To that end, this dissertation&#xD;
records a 'living heritage'-consisting of 914 examples-and reconstitutes a 'dead heritage'-with 246-, totalling a&#xD;
sample of 1160 buildings. Mapping this language helped decode its urban dispersion as well as understand its&#xD;
nexus to urban dynamics. Analytical attributes were applied to systematize the examples according to&#xD;
morphological parameters, with an emphasis on surfaces and volumes. This analytical effort contributed to&#xD;
evaluate the local eclectic architectural practice in lightof the historicalfactors that conditioned its manifestation,&#xD;
reception, and diffusion. Results indicate that eclecticism was mostly spread through the oldest areas and&#xD;
extended significantly through the expansion sectors, where it assumed a structuring role. Morphologically, it was&#xD;
found that the language is expressed in three distinct phases. In the first phase, continuities with the colonial and&#xD;
imperial modus aedificandi are revealed, frequently manifesting as 'makeup'applied over preexisting buildings in&#xD;
the initial nucleus. In the second phase, the language acquires systemic contours driven by the economic&#xD;
prosperity of the cotton trade; it spreads through the expansion sectors of the city, diffuses among higher social&#xD;
strata, and experiences greater constructive freedom with the introduction of frontal lot setbacks. A more assertive&#xD;
historicist rupture with the colonial tradition is then consolidated, enabling formal experimentations that&#xD;
consummate the modernizing project. In the third phase, a conceptual departure from eclectic canons occurs,&#xD;
incorporating a tendency toward ornamental depuration that would anticipate modernism. It is concluded that&#xD;
eclecticism manifests itself in João Pessoa as an expanded field of compositional freedom, marked by&#xD;
personalized interpretations of consecrated repertoires that confer visual appeal to buildings and endow the city&#xD;
with an inventive practice aligned with the modernizing desires of republican society.

Abstract: This dissertation investigates the relationship between the use of public toilets and the built environment along sections of Recife’s waterfront, where facilities were recently renovated and replicated as part of the Orla Parque project. Public toilets are urban amenities for collective use, serving as catalysts for sustainable, accessible, and equitable cities. Characteristics of the urban form have been linked to promoting or hindering urban vitality. This study investigates the hypothesis that, although they provide adequate coverage for walkability along Recife’s waterfront, public toilets have diverse urban surroundings that impact urban vitality and toilet usage. On the other hand, it investigates the hypothesis that the toilets themselves contribute to the use of public space by diverse groups, while also examining users’ perceptions. Urban vitality was examined in terms of the mix of social groups, diverse neighborhoods, and the intensity of pedestrian flows. The study analyzed road network configurations by selecting four case studies to investigate the surrounding environment—land use, building density, and interfaces—and urban vitality, using questionnaires and behavioral and traffic flow mapping. Results revealed an asymmetrical distribution of street public toilets in Recife, concentrated along the waterfront (83.33%), mostly serving walkable distances (500 m). More spatially integrated surroundings had more passersby; however, the highest usage of the toilets was in the surrounding area, which, despite low overall integration, has more non-residential addresses and more interfaces with access and visibility (in Brasília Teimosa). Generally, toilets users came from farther away and stayed longer on the beach than those who do not usually use the toilets. Cleanliness and dirt were central concerns in users’ minds, but many pointed to insufficient capacity as the main area for improvement. The findings regarding the relationships between urban form and uses contribute to the urban planning of public toilets and the management of this infrastructure.

    <title>O capital simbólico em movimento: premiações e arquitetura na América Latina</title>

Abstract: This work aims to investigate contemporary architecture awards in Latin America, based on Pierre Bourdieu's theories of capital and symbolic power. It uses the Rogelio Salmona Latin American Architecture Prize and the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize as empirical objects. Every field, defined by Bourdieu (1989 [2003]) as structured spaces that support competition and accumulation of capital, possesses its own rules of negotiation and transaction, limits and restrictions, presenting a general economy of practices in which power is contested to produce value. The contemporary scenario, marked by consumption and the need for constant renewal of taste, adds new challenges to the means for moving symbolic capital in the architectural field, such as magazines, biennials, exhibitions, internet, and awards, instruments of distinction for the representation of architectural practice in Latin America. In this context, awards are characterized by the objective of synthesizing the universe considered in a single work, constituting particular questions for the conversion and expansion of symbolic capital within the context of the competition. The similarities and differences present in the selection mechanisms, agents, and results of the two awards studied here make them exemplary in reproducing dynamics common to awards, but positioned from their specific context and particularized in an attempt to amplify their capacity to confer prestige.; RESUMEN.

Abstract: Population aging has long ceased to be merely statistical projections of a distant future and has become a global, evolving, and complex phenomenon that brings with it both physical and emotional challenges. The fastest growth in the elderly population is expected to occur in less developed countries—a trend reflected in Brazil’s demographic landscape. As a result, governments, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations have been working to promote strategies that support quality of life through public policies aimed at encouraging healthy aging. Architecture and urban planning, which are responsible for the design of spaces, join in a multidisciplinary manner with other fields of knowledge, contributing to the well-being of the elderly. This population, in the face of physiological changes and the functional decline intrinsic to aging, interacts in a particular way with their environments—especially residential ones—because these involve both physical and subjective aspects related to people and their surroundings.This thesis aims to reflect on residential environments for the elderly, guided by the Ageing in Place approach through a methodological framework in the form of a set of tools suited for contextual assessment and guidance in planning housing for old age. This framework is grounded in understanding the relationships between older adults and their homes, using the proposed methodology and incorporating affective listening. Both objective and subjective aspects were explored and analyzed regarding emotional relationships, place attachment, and perceptions of urban and private living environments. A literature review and bibliographic research were conducted to build the conceptual foundation, followed by data collection to better understand current realities. The city of João Pessoa, in the state of Paraíba (PB), was chosen as the area for a qualitative exploratory research, focusing on a group of elderly participants in the extension project Oficina Casa Afetiva (Affective Home Workshop), enrolled at the Paraíba Institute on Aging (Instituto Paraibano de Envelhecimento) at UFPB. This group participated in interactive workshops where tools such as a visual selection, participatory mapping, mental maps, cube-house modeling, wish poems, photographic surveys, affective listening, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews were used. Through the analysis and discussion of the tools applied during the various proposed moments with this heterogeneous group, it was found that all tools had both strengths and limitations and complemented one another. A methodological framework was proposed, comprising a set of tools — CASA A(fe)TIVA, based on the results obtained from the sample group. Despite the diversity of family arrangements and the presence of conflicting emotions, participants revealed strong emotional bonds and attachments to their living spaces, shaped by lived memories and the ambiance of their homes. These emotional ties often outweighed physical factors such as accessibility and adaptability, which were ultimately constrained by economic and financial considerations—key determinants in the feasibility of ageing in place. This directly impacts quality of life, emotional and physical well-being, comfort, safety, autonomy, and the overall well-being of older individuals, influencing planning and decision-making related to housing in old age. Further research is recommended to validate the proposed set of tools.
