Abstract: This study investigates strategies for the activation of sociocognitive frames that are culturally shared and that organize meaning and guide the interpretation of the narrative-advertising discourse of the “Maria Clara & JP” YouTube channel. The channel is examined as a paradigmatic case of contemporary Brazilian children’s media culture, in which advertising occurs implicitly, becoming legitimized and embedded in children’s affective and playful routines, which increases its persuasive effectiveness and makes critical identification more difficult. Grounded in Frame Semantics, theories of multiliteracies, and studies on digital advertising discourse, the research adopts a qualitative approach based on the analysis of two representative videos selected for their clear use of multimodal persuasive practices. The qualitative case study is justified by the need to understand how meanings of consumption are legitimized through the articulation of language, cognition, and digital media. The analysis of these paradigmatic cases reveals the activation of specific and powerful frames, such as “product as a solution to learning difficulties” and “learning as a pleasurable experience linked to consumption,” supported by a multimodal persuasive strategy that integrates linguistic resources (imperative verbs, praise), visual resources (close-ups, gestures, facial expressions), and sound elements (cheerful soundtracks, punctual effects). Based on these findings, an educational folder was developed for the training of early-years teachers, aiming to pedagogically support the critical deconstruction of the frames and persuasive strategies identified, and to promote, in accordance with the BNCC and multiliteracies principles, the critical reading of digital advertising in Portuguese language education.

Abstract: Foreign language acquisition in childhood is a multifaceted process that involves the
development of different linguistic levels in interaction with maturational, cognitive, and
exposure-related factors. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the development of
different linguistic levels in Brazilian children who are learning English as a foreign
language. Based on the language development model proposed by Skeide and Friederici
(2016), this research seeks to understand how children in the process of linguistic
development acquire the phonological, morphosyntactic, and prosodic levels in English,
considering their prior knowledge of Brazilian Portuguese as their mother tongue. The
experimental component of the study involved the creation of three psycholinguistic
experiments designed to assess linguistic development at the phonological,
morphosyntactic, and prosodic levels. The research was conducted at a private language
school in the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil (Cultura Inglesa Manaíra), and the
participants were children enrolled at the school aged 6, 7, and 8 years, with exposure to
English for 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. The presentation of the experiments and the
participants’ responses were administered through Google Forms. In the phonological
experiment, participants were exposed to audio recordings of words containing English
phonemes that do not exist in Brazilian Portuguese (i.e., /˄, æ, ɵ, ð/). The task required
participants to listen to three words and identify which one contained the previously
presented phoneme. The morphosyntactic experiment addressed verbal inflectional
regularity and word derivation using the suffixes –able and –ly. Participants were asked
to listen to pairs of sentences containing correct and incorrect word forms and select the
correct sentence. In the prosodic experiment, participants listened to sentences and
selected the image that best corresponded to the sentence according to its prosody. The
results indicated that children’s linguistic development partially follows the stages
observed in first language acquisition, with differences associated with age and length of
exposure to the foreign language. Age proved to be a determining factor at the
phonological level, whereas length of exposure had a more significant influence on the
morphosyntactic and prosodic levels. These findings suggest that, although foreign
language acquisition follows some stages of the first language acquisition model, it is
modulated by experiential factors and by transfer from the mother tongue. In addition to
contributing to the understanding of linguistic processing in childhood foreign language
acquisition contexts, this study offers relevant methodological contributions by proposing
original experiments designed for a child population. Such instruments and results may
serve as a basis for future research and for the improvement of pedagogical practices in
foreign language teaching.

Abstract: The year 2022 in Brazil was marked by social and political tensions, mainly resulting from
the polarization between the two leading candidates in the polls, Lula and Bolsonaro.
Naturally, the major television networks, through their newscasts, covered the campaigns of
these candidates; however, not always in the same way, and they were sometimes accused by
the public of favoring one side in the electoral disputes. That said, the present study
investigates how argumentation was constructed in news reports broadcast by Rede Globo
and Record on their flagship newscasts (Jornal Nacional and Jornal da Record), hereafter JN
and JR, respectively. Our overall objective is to analyze how the semantic-argumentative
phenomenon of polyphony, in its various facets, manifests itself in the oral texts of JN and JR
in order to construct argumentation within the television news genre. This investigation is
descriptive and qualitative in nature and is situated within the linguistic field of
Argumentative Semantics. To build our corpus, we mapped the news reports aired in both
newscasts throughout September 2022 and transcribed a total of 29 news items addressing
political events related to the presidential campaign of the main candidates. Through
comparative analysis, we sought to answer questions such as: which semantic-argumentative
phenomena are most relevant to the construction of argumentation in television news? When
reporting on the same event, do the aforementioned newscasts present similar or different
semantic blocks? The main theoretical assumptions adopted were Carel’s Argumentative
Theory of Polyphony (TAP) (2010; 2011a; 2021b); Carel’s Theory of Semantic Blocks
(2021a); studies on Argumentation and Polyphony by Ducrot (1987; 1988); and the different
forms of mentioning others’ speech, according to Moyano (2007). Based on the analyses
conducted and the observation of the corpus, we found that the construction of argumentation
in the television news genre is carried out mainly through the semantic-argumentative
phenomenon of polyphony in its various facets (polyphony of speakers through direct and
indirect style; collective voices; narrativized discourse; and citative nominalizations), as well
as through the meaning effects activated by the different semantic blocks and argumentative
aspects prevailing in journalistic news. Our results indicate that, despite reporting the same
facts, JR and JN often select different aspects of the events, which ends up creating blocks of
meaning that at times favor and at other times disfavor certain politicians. We also observed
that, in general, JR displayed argumentation more favorable to Bolsonaro and unfavorable to
Lula and Ciro Gomes. In turn, JN adopted a more moderate stance toward all the candidates,
though still with criticisms of candidate Jair Bolsonaro and the party to which he was
affiliated.; RESUMEN.
(TAP), de Carel (2010; 2011a; 2021b); la Teoría de los Bloques Semánticos, de Carel (2021a);
a Bolsonaro y desfavorable a Lula y Ciro Gomes. Por su parte, el JN adoptó una postura más
moderada en relación con todos los candidatos, aunque con críticas al candidato Jair
Bolsonaro y al partido al que estaba afiliado.

Abstract: Language comprehension is a complex process, and this complexity is heightened when
the listener must focus on a single sound source and suppress competing stimuli in
situations of acoustic overload. Although the auditory system filters out irrelevant
information and maintains focus on what is relevant (Bronkhorst, 2015), the signal is
compromised at the sensory level, so lexical access and comprehension can suffer
significant interference. This may occur with greater interference from individuals who
speak two languages, as there may be greater competition between the target language
and more than one background language (Krizman et al., 2017). Thus, the main objective
of this research is to investigate lexical access of the second language (L2) in word
recognition in Spanish based on auditory stimulation with different linguistic and acoustic
interferences. Specifically, the aim is to a) Investigate the effects of auditory degradation
caused by background conversations in different languages: L1, L2, and unknown
language; b) To understand the different acoustic and linguistic influences of background
conversations during lexical access; and c) To measure differences in lexical processing
behavior of intermediate and advanced bilinguals in word recognition and lexical access.
Methodologically, the experimental lexical decision task with cross-modal priming was
used, with the prime being auditory and degraded by background conversations under
different conditions, and the target being visual. The hypothesis guiding this work is that
bilingual word processing, in terms of lexical access, is influenced by linguistic
facilitation—when a previous stimulus linguistically facilitates the target—and by
acoustic degradation, whose operation of this access works as a function of bilingualism
and proficiency in the second language. The data suggest that, at the processing level, L2
proficiency interferes with the lexical access of words masked by background
conversations. Furthermore, the study verified the existence of the cross-modal priming
effect with linguistic facilitation without direct interference from the sensory level, and
that this facilitation occurs even with a degraded signal.
