It is based on the assumption that different production contexts, editorial and non-institutional, directly influence translation choices and, consequently, the way cultural elements from the source text are presented to the reader. The research is characterized as qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive, grounded in Franco-Aixelá’s (2013) model of culture-specific items and in the descriptive approach proposed by Lambert and Van Gorp (2014). The corpus consists of the Brazilian commercial translation, published by Panini, and scanlations produced by fan groups, from which 13 excerpts from the first volumes were selected based on the presence of cultural markers, idiomatic expressions, and features of orality. The results reveal significant differences between the versions: scanlations tend to favor adaptation and simplification strategies, bringing the text closer to the target culture, whereas the commercial translation shows a stronger tendency to preserve cultural elements from the source text, albeit with adaptations and explanations. It is concluded that translation choices are shaped by factors such as target audience, production time, and circulation context, reinforcing translation as a situated cultural practice. It focuses on new media critics on the TikTok platform, specifically, in the literary community known as booktok. The work aimed to analyze literary reviews of translated books; check how often the translation and translators are mentioned in the videos; verify which other power agents are included; check, in the respective videos, if they mention the books are translated; and establish a relationship with the issue of the translator's invisibility (Venuti, 1995) and the concept of patronage (Lefevere, 1985 apud Martins, 2010). The research consisted of an analysis of 26 video reviews, posted between 2023 and 2024, which went through stages of data collection, treatment and analysis, aided by the AntConc tool. The research concluded that this invisibility reflects the devaluation of the translator's role in the publishing market, even in new media. However, few undergraduate translation students are aware of how to break into it. This bachelor’s dissertation discusses translation as a profession. It touches on Translation Competence (Hurtado Albir, 2017; EMT, 2017; Galán-Mañas; López-García; Souza Júnior, 2023), education, translators’ working conditions, resumés, portfolios, prospecting for clients, etc. This bachelor’s dissertation is based on the author’s professional and academic experience, as well as on works by McKay (2011; 2015; 2017), Said (2013), Whitty (2014; 2017), and Compan (2020), among others. We can conclude that independence, proactivity, critical thinking, and commitment to learning are essential for translators. At the end of this bachelor’s dissertation, we offer suggestions of resources to assist in developing Translation Competence. We also present a Translation Industry jargon glossary. As a student of the program who also acted as translator and editor, I explore my personal and professional experience throughout the translation, editing, and publication journey. This study explores the underlying aspects of the translation process that led to the publication of the work, highlighting its beginning, the challenges faced, the collaboration among translators, the applied learning, and the further development of the translation skills of those involved. The accounts provided here can be used as a source of research and information for those interested in the fields of Translation Studies.
