Abstract: This study reflects on the contributions of intercultural mediation to the reception of the&#xD;
Warao indigenous people in Paraíba, based on the author's academic and outreach&#xD;
experiences. The research starts from the question of how professionals in Foreign Languages&#xD;
Applied to International Negotiations (LEA-NI) contribute to intercultural mediation and the&#xD;
defense of the rights of these peoples. The motivation for the study stems from academic and&#xD;
extension experiences lived by the author with indigenous immigrants, through projects such&#xD;
as CONTEMP, the Yaotasaba Warao solidarity economy course, and I COMIGRAR PB, all&#xD;
carried out at the Federal University of Paraíba. The methodology used is qualitative in&#xD;
nature, exploratory and descriptive, using the textual genre of experience reports, based on&#xD;
bibliographic references. In addition, the work is guided by the principles of human rights,&#xD;
based, among other documents, on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of&#xD;
Indigenous Peoples (2007). Finally, the study seeks to offer theoretical and practical&#xD;
contributions to the formulation of fairer and more intercultural reception strategies,&#xD;
highlighting that care and mediation with indigenous migrants must take into account&#xD;
linguistic, cultural, and institutional aspects in an integrated manner.

Abstract: This study aims to understand the importance of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in the&#xD;
implementation of the initiative “COVID-19 Prevention in Food Services: Reopening of Bars&#xD;
and Restaurants,” promoted by the extension project “Compliance with Sanitary and Tourism&#xD;
Regulations in the Sale of Food by Food Security Beneficiaries in João Pessoa,” within the&#xD;
context of the changes experienced by the tourism and food markets during the COVID-19&#xD;
pandemic. Through a qualitative exploratory approach, a bibliographic review was conducted&#xD;
based on the studies of Hutchinson and Waters (1987) and Rodrigues (2020) regarding the&#xD;
topics addressed. From the research, it was possible to observe the importance of English for&#xD;
Specific Purposes in the training and qualification of professionals in the tourism and food&#xD;
sectors. It also highlighted the need for improvements in the use of a foreign language to serve&#xD;
international customers, especially following the end of social distancing measures and the&#xD;
return of tourism activities. Finally, the research confirmed the usefulness and necessity of&#xD;
employing foreign languages for specific purposes in the training of workers in the&#xD;
aforementioned economic sectors

Abstract: Esta investigación analiza la identidad lingüística y cultural en la región de Cataluña, España,&#xD;
desde la perspectiva de las políticas lingüísticas implementadas después de la dictadura&#xD;
franquista (1939-1975). Para ello se estudiaron los conceptos de lengua, cultura e identidad,&#xD;
relacionándolos con el uso de la lengua catalana como herramienta de afirmación cultural.&#xD;
Además, se analizó la importancia de utilizar las políticas lingüísticas en el ámbito académico&#xD;
para la normalización y promoción de la lengua catalana. La metodología utilizada fue de&#xD;
carácter cualitativo y exploratorio-descriptivo. En cuanto a la naturaleza de los datos analizados,&#xD;
se analizaron fuentes bibliográficas de autores que estudiaron el tema, así como fuentes&#xD;
documentales como documentos públicos y estatutos de las Universidades de Barcelona y&#xD;
Girona. Como referente teórico de los conceptos de lengua, cultura e identidad cultural se&#xD;
utilizaron textos de Coelho y Mesquita (2013), Silva (2000) y Canedo (2007), entre otros. Para&#xD;
los conceptos de políticas lingüísticas se utilizaron las definiciones de Lagares y Savedra (2012)&#xD;
y Canedo (2007). Los resultados indican que el uso de políticas lingüísticas en diversos ámbitos&#xD;
de la sociedad, especialmente en el ámbito académico, proporcionó la recuperación de la&#xD;
identidad cultural en la región de Cataluña y un aumento del número de hablantes de la lengua&#xD;
catalana, dentro y fuera de sus fronteras geográficas.

Abstract: In situations where there are interactions between cultures that speak different&#xD;
languages, the understanding of foreign languages is extremely important. However,&#xD;
linguistic knowledge by itself is not enough (Agar, 1994). Without cultural knowledge,&#xD;
interactions become more susceptible to misunderstandings that can be detrimental in&#xD;
sensitive situations such as international conflict mediation (Jayaswal, 2009).&#xD;
Therefore, we understand that the lack of intercultural knowledge in international&#xD;
interactions, with an emphasis on international mediation, hinders this process. In view&#xD;
of this problem, we were guided by the following research question: “How relevant is&#xD;
intercultural understanding in the process of international mediation?”. In order to&#xD;
answer this question, the general objective of this qualitative and bibliographical study&#xD;
was to identify the relevance of intercultural understanding in international mediation,&#xD;
by analyzing dialogues from the film Arrival (2016). In the movie, the plot revolves&#xD;
around the world after the appearance of 12 alien spaceships in different parts of the&#xD;
Earth and the attempt to communicate with the aliens who inhabit them (Moreira,&#xD;
2017). Using screen ethnography, introduced by Carmen Rial in 2004 (Colins; Lima,&#xD;
2020), as our method of analysis, we analyzed previously selected dialogues about&#xD;
the film in a field diary. This research reflects on the intrinsic relationship between&#xD;
language and culture, as well as discusses intercultural communication, international&#xD;
mediation theories and cinema as an object of analysis. Based on authors such as&#xD;
Agar (1994), Barna (1994), Canclini (2004), among others. The actions of the character&#xD;
Louise Banks in the process of communication and mediation with the aliens who&#xD;
inhabit the ships were analyzed, compared to society nowadays. The results from the&#xD;
cinematic example, emphasize that Louise's intercultural knowledge set her apart from&#xD;
the other linguists, allowing her to communicate effectively with the aliens and the other&#xD;
human beings involved in the situation, avoiding conflict. By drawing a parallel between&#xD;
the profiles of Louise and the Foreign Languages Applied to International Negotiations&#xD;
-FLAIN graduates, we can come to the conclusion that Louise Banks would be an&#xD;
example of a FLAIN professional, it is also possible to highlight the importance of the&#xD;
FLAIN course in today's world.
