Abstract: This dissertation analyzes the living and health conditions of the population of Paraíba do Norte
between 1877 and 1880, within the context of the so-called "Great Drought" of 1877-1879.
Situated within the field of the History of Health and Disease, the research investigates the main
measures of healthcare, food, and housing assistance directed at both the resident population
and those in displacement, analytically understood here as migrants, both affected, albeit in
different ways, by the effects of the drought. The study problematizes the representations
constructed about these migrants in administrative, medical, and journalistic sources, as well as
hygiene standards, healing practices, and the main causes of death during this period. We also
consider the migratory flows from the Sertão region to the other mesoregions of Paraíba and,
subsequently, the return movements to the interior from 1880 onwards, as well as public
policies to combat droughts, such as the construction of dams and emergency support centers,
like infirmaries, hospitals, and colonial settlements. The analysis engages with the New Cultural
and Social History, mobilizing concepts such as social representations, to understand how
migrants were portrayed in the sources; biopolitics, to examine the mechanisms of control over
collective health; and political cultures, to interpret the government's actions and discourses in
the face of the crisis. The concept of networks of sociability and experience is used to identify
family and institutional ties and work relationships formed in this context. The methodological
approach is anchored in Historical Demography, especially in the systematic use of Parish
Death Registers, which make it possible to reconstruct age profiles, mortality patterns, and the
effects of drought on the most vulnerable social groups. This set of sources is complemented
by medical reports, correspondence, hospital statistical maps, administrative documents, and
periodicals from the time. By broadening the scope to the year 1880, the dissertation
demonstrates that the effects of the drought extended beyond its climatic end, revealing the
persistence of diseases, the precariousness of living conditions, and the limitations of public
assistance policies in the post-drought period. In this way, the work contributes to
historiography by highlighting the drought as a historically produced social and sanitary crisis,
marked by profound inequalities and experiences of illness, suffering, and resistance.

Título: Entre arenas: o futebol na ditadura empresarial-militar e a construção dos estádios da Paraíba na década de 1970
Autor(es): Bandeira, Gabriel Luar Calado

Abstract: This dissertation analyzes the relationship between football and the Brazilian Business-
Military Dictatorship in the 1970s, specifically focusing on the simultaneous construction

of the "Almeidão" stadium in João Pessoa and the "Amigão" stadium in Campina Grande,
both inaugurated in 1975. The research investigates how the sport was instrumentalized
by the regime as a tool for propaganda, political legitimization, and national integration,
culminating in the creation of the National Championship in 1971 and the subsequent
demand for monumental arenas. The study examines the role of Governor Ernani Sátyro
and the local disputes between the capital and the interior, demonstrating that these
construction projects functioned as "gears of consent," serving the interests of
construction companies and the federal developmentalist project, as well as the regional
oligarchies of the ARENA party. Methodologically, the work relies on a critical analysis
and triangulation of sources from the official, sports, and alternative press, as well as
government documents, to understand the narratives of modernity and the silences
imposed by censorship. Finally, the dissertation discusses the legacy of these buildings
and historical memory, problematizing the tributes to figures of the dictatorial period
present in Paraíba's urban toponymy.

Orientador: Leite, Priscilla Gontijo
Abstract: This dissertation investigates stásis (στάσις), the Greek term denoting internal conflict, in
Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War, from a historiographical approach centered on
the articulation between external war and internal conflict. Initially, a systematic survey of the
uses of the term throughout the entire work was conducted, from which instances analyzed in
the first three books were selected, chosen for concentrating distinct approaches adopted by the
author. The study is organized into three chapters. The first discusses the author, his work, and
the context of the initial phase of the Peloponnesian War. The second examines the contributions
of ancient sources and modern historiography to the understanding of the notion of stásis. The
third is devoted to the analysis of the Thucydidean text, addressing stásis in the Archaeology,
the Methodology, Epidamnus, the Plague of Athens, Mytilene, and Corcyra. It is argued that
the relationship between external conflict and internal conflict constitutes a structuring axis of
Thucydides’ narrative and that, from the case of Corcyra onward, Thucydides develops an
authorial reflection of broad scope on human nature, the fragility of norms, the
instrumentalization of political discourse, and the dissolution of civic bonds. Situated within
the field of Ancient History and in dialogue with historiography, the theory of history, and
Classical Studies, the research understands stásis as a constitutive element of the Greek
historical culture of the Classical period, reaffirming the centrality of Thucydides’ work to the
historiographical debate on crisis, power, and violence.

Título: Cidadania, gênero e ensino de história antiga: discussões a partir da retórica
Autor(es): Silva, Ana Carolina Simões

Abstract: In this research, we discuss the importance of the debate on citizenship and gender in the
teaching of Ancient History. Using Jörn Rüsen’s work on Culture and Historical
Consciousness (2016) as a theoretical framework, we reflect on the potential of History
teaching for shaping a meaningful temporal and spatial orientation in students' everyday lives,
based on a dialogue between Antiquity and the contemporary world. Starting from the
objections raised regarding the treatment of citizenship in the Base Nacional Comum
Curricular (BNCC), which emphasizes men's participation and voting power in assemblies,
we aim to analyze the topic from broader perspectives, in order to reveal the dynamics
between male and female citizens in the shared life of the polis. This research assumes that
understanding citizenship through everyday community relations helps students reflect on
their own experiences and their relationship with citizenship beyond the act of voting. To
support this argument, we use as sources four judicial speeches by the orator Isaeus: On the
Estate of Cleonymus (Is. I), On the Estate of Menecles (Is. II), On the Estate of Pyrrhus (Is.
III), and On the Estate of Philoctemon (Is. VI). In these speeches, the arguments are
constructed through the characterization of good and bad citizens, and the criteria for such
categorization are not related to participation in assemblies or Athenian magistracies, but
rather to family relations, community involvement, and religious activity within the polis.
Based on this, we aim to demonstrate a dimension of Athenian citizenship that is as
fundamental to the polis as the assemblies, also recognizing female citizens as essential to the
functioning of the city. In an effort to contribute to the democratization of education and the
use of rhetoric in the classroom, we developed a didactic proposal based on Isaeus's speeches
for basic education. We conclude in this study that the teaching of Ancient History is essential
for promoting a critical and practical education for students' everyday lives.
