Abstract: This study examines the advertising discourses promoting and legitimizing the Parque
Ecológico Sanhauá (PES) and the Programa João Pessoa Sustentável (PJPS), as well as
their relationship with media narratives constructed and shared on digital platforms by
communities affected by these urban projects. It analyzes the politics of signification
and discursive struggles surrounding these initiatives by Prefeitura Municipal de João
Pessoa (PMJP), focusing on the interplay between official discourse, primarily
represented through the city’s audiovisual advertising, and counter-narratives
disseminated via Instagram by grassroots groups like Associação de Mulheres do Porto
do Capim and S.O.S 8 Comunidades. At the heart of these conflicts lies the planned
forced displacement of residents from specific neighborhoods in João Pessoa. The
research methodology involved: Identifying key discursive elements (both formal and
thematic) within the promotional campaigns for PES and PJPS; Mapping the media
narratives crafted by affected civil society groups regarding their positions on these
projects. The urban conflicts surrounding PES and PJPS manifest as an asymmetrical
"media imagery war". While the PMJP invests millions annually in institutional
advertising—contracting agencies, production companies, and multimedia outlets (TV,
radio, billboards, digital platforms) to ensure broad corporate-style discursive reach—
affected communities operate with limited financial resources and labor division,
resulting in constrained visibility. In this context, advertising functions as an
institutional "weapon of war," constructing consent around specific urban imaginaries,
notions of belonging, and transformation agendas. The PMJP’s narratives combine
meanings like green city, solar city, historic city, growth, care and quality of life,
framing the projects as embodiments of these ideals, with project-specific signifiers like
- strategically deployed in relation to community discourses -, sustainability, innovation,
efficiency, transparency, participation, development and progress. Affected populations
reinterpret some of these signifiers through social media to legitimize their right to
remain, while also generating alternative meanings about the projects, their
neighborhoods, and João Pessoa itself. Beyond outright opposition, their
communication fundamentally expresses a desire to be heard, to dialogue, and to
participate in decisions about their territories.

Orientador: Michetti, Miqueli
Abstract: This thesis examines the symbolic disputes among upper-middle and upper-class fractions in
Recife, focusing on how ways of living, classifying, and representing the city express social
distinctions. The contrast between the North and South Zones reveals opposing lifestyles: the
former tied to cultural capital and restraint, the latter to economic capital and real estate prestige.
Beyond geography, these are socially constructed territories where groups seek recognition and
legitimacy. Based on 80 interviews and participant observation, and drawing on Bourdieu,
Sherman, Savage, Friedman, and Laurison, the study concludes that full membership in the
elites requires not only income or location, but embodied dispositions and symbolic recognition.

Abstract: No abstract.; RESUMÉ

Orientador: Garcia, Loreley Gomes
Abstract: The trial of the lawsuits of rural special retirement is mainly held by special federal courts
(Juizados Especiais Federais – JEFs). For the demarcation of the cases, the judges must
decide whether the plaintiff is a special rural insured, a task that involves a lot of legal
concepts and subjective interpretations in the microcosm of judicial practice. Based on Erving
Goffman theatrology, interviews, hearings and rulings of Paraíba JEFs were analyzed for
gender inequalities in the discourse of the actors involved in social interaction. Particularly,
the understandings given to labor and rural individually or in a household system working
were studied. The differences stem, basically, from the pre –conceptions which state that, in
family agriculture, the labor to be considered is the "heavy" work and that married women
"help" their husbands or depend on them financially. It was observed that the ideas of "light"
work and "heavy" work were used as "technologies of gender" for classifying and regulating
who is the special rural insured, inserting it in a familiar and predictable social facade, which,
on the other hand, is very restricted and may consequently generate potential injustices. There
was also found an interesting result concerning the construction of a stereotype of rural
worker or employee, demonstrating, therefore, that the effects of this technology extend to the
very bodies of the plaintiffs.; RÉSUMÉ.
