A donzela-guerreira na literatura: um olhar semiótico sobre o processo de mitificação da personagem histórica

Abstract

We call heroicization or mythification the process of transformation of a historical character into a mythified character, in which historical facts are re-signified through various discursive genres over the years, making it difficult to distinguish between myth and history. Taking literary criticism on the Warrior Maiden as a direction, the mythical character studied was Joan of Arc. The study started with the following question: How is the mythical image of Joan of Arc represented in the works studied? Our hypothesis is that the process of heroicization/mythification of the historical character into a literary character starts from the already solidified myth, that is, it is inspired by the representation already existing in the popular imagination. The theoretical basis used in this study was the Semiotics of Cultures (RASTIER,2010; PAIS, 1993), which analysis methodology is interpretative, historical and comparative, complemented with Greimasian Semiotics, which focuses on the analysis of the path of signification present in the texts. Thus, the objective of this work was to study the semiotic aspects of the myth of the Warrior Maiden in the process of mythification of the historical character Joan of Arc and to verify, specifically, how Joan of Arc is represented in literary language, observing the value systems present in the studied corpus and the thematic roles assumed by the French heroine, considering the context of the social practice that generated the myth, which was the Hundred Years' War. The process of mythification of this historical character was studied through the interpretative analysis of the following works: A vida de Joana d'Arc, by Érico Veríssimo (1978); Joana d'Arc e suas batalhas, by Phil Robins (2010); A vida fabulosa de Joana d'Arc, by Patricia Deps (2020); and Joana d'Arc, by Tony DiGerolamo (2010). The study enabled us to conclude that Joan of Arc meets the requirements of the Warrior Maiden paradigm. Moreover, the mythical image present in the corpus brings thematic roles already commonly attributed to Joan of Arc (saint, maiden, warrior, and witch) and moves from a literature to an ethno-literature, by exploring the mythified image of a historical character and enabling various interpretive readings without losing her mythical status.

RÉSUMÉ. Nous appelons héroïsation ou mythification le processus de transformation d'un personnage historique en un personnage mysthifié, dans lequel les faits historiques sont re-signifiés à travers les différents genres discursifs, au fil des années, rendant difficile la distinction entre le mythe et l'histoire. En prenant comme direction la critique littéraire sur la Jeune Fille Guerrière, le personnage mythique étudié était Jeanne d'Arc. L’étude est partie de la question suivante : Comment l’image mythique de Jeanne d’Arc est-elle représentée dans les oeuvres étudiées ? Notre hypothèse est que le processus d'héroïsation/mitification du personnage historique en personnage littéraire s'éloigne du mythe déjà solidifié, c'est-à-dire qu'il s'inspire de la représentation déjà existante dans l'imaginaire populaire. La base théorique utilisée dans cette étude était la Sémiotique des Cultures (RASTIER,2010 ; PAIS, 1993), dont la méthodologie d'analyse est interprétative, historique et comparative, complétée par la Sémiotique Greimassienne, qui se concentre sur l'analyse du parcours de signification présent dans les textes. Ainsi, l'objectif de ce travail a été d'étudier les aspects sémiotiques du mythe de la Jeune Fille Guerrière dans le processus de mythification du personnage historique Jeanne d'Arc et de vérifier, concrètement, comment Jeanne d'Arc est représentée dans le langage littéraire, observant les systèmes de valeurs présents dans le corpus étudié et les rôles thématiques assumés par l’héroïne Français, en considérant le contexte de la pratique sociale qui génère le mythe, qui était la guerre de Cent Ans. Le processus de mitification de ce personnage historique a été étudié à travers l’analyse interprétative des oeuvres suivantes: La vie de Jeanne d’Arc, par Érico Veríssimo (1978); Jeanne d’Arc et ses batailles, de Robins Phil (2010); La vie fabuleuse de Jeanne d’Arc, de Patricia Deps (2020); et Jeanne d’Arc, de Tony DiGerolamo (2010). L’étude nous a permis de conclure que Jeanne d’Arc répond aux exigences du paradigme de la Jeune Fille Guerrière. De plus, l'image mythique présente dans le corpus apporte des rôles thématiques communément déjà attribués à Jeanne d'Arc (sainte, jeune fille, guerrière et sorcière) et passe d'une littérature à une ethnolittérature, en explorant l'image mythifiée d'un personnage historique et en permettant plusieurs lectures interprétatives sans perdre son statut mythique.
