dc.description.abstract | Visual devices, such as photography or painting, established complex relations of power between colonizing and colonized subjects. As Edward Said demonstrated in Orientalism, culture was a valuable ally in this complex imperial system of colonial domination. The present text aims to establish connections between Brazilian photography and the genealogy of A Negra (1923) by Tarsila do Amaral. Starting from the conviction that images are constructors of realities, we aim to highlight some relationships and problems that link the photography of the late nineteenth century and the modernist painting of the early twentieth. | pt_BR |

dc.description.resumo | Las maquinarias de la visualidad, como la fotografía o la pintura, establecieron complejas relaciones de poder entre los sujetos colonizadores y colonizados. Como demostró Edward Said en Orientalismo la cultura fue una valiosa aliada, si no la que más, en este complejo sistema imperial de dominación colonial. El presente texto trata de establecer conexiones entre la fotografía brasileña y la genealogía de A Negra (1923) de Tarsila do Amaral. A partir del convencimiento de que las imágenes son constructoras de realidades, pretendemos apuntar algunas relaciones y problemas que enlazan la fotografía de finales del siglo xix y la pintura modernista de principios del siglo xx. | pt_BR |
