Abstract

This work aims to analyze the image of women in the Machado de Assis´ masterpiece Dom Casmurro. The paper proposes the examination of the construction of the female profile in the social-historical perspective of the women´s segregative character in the 19th century. From Capitu is studied the subject of segregation who places women in a context of submission for male domination. With the objective of critically observing the discussions about the delegitimized female figure, the research discusses how the literary composition focuses on the dominant model of some Brazilian institutions, such as the family and the changing politics in the end of the 19th century.
