Abstract

Theater is a form of artistic expression that encompasses multiple languages and elements that intertwine to create a unique experience for the audience. Among these elements, the costumes play a fundamental role in characterizing the characters, setting the narrative and communicating symbolic and aesthetic meanings during the performance. In this approach, the present work sought to present an analysis of the construction of Neusa Sueli's costume in the process of putting together the show Navalha na Carne, aiming to understand how the costume contributes to the characterization of the character and to the narrative of the play, as well as to the construction of meanings and symbolism in the context of staging, among other aspects. The empirical or field methodology defined by Rodrigues (2007) was used, which seeks primary sources, in the world of events not provoked or controlled by the researcher, through a procedure based on direct observation of the object studied. Initially, the social construction of theater was discussed, covering the history of costumes, their importance and function, culminating with a brief analysis of the character; Then, we focused on the analysis of the show Navalha na Carne, highlighting the focus on the construction of the work's costumes, analysis of the characters within the plot, addressing the critical aspects of the social plot and its biases. The process of constructing Neusa Sueli's costume clearly sought to create a stereotype of a woman identified with her condition as a sex worker, who in the dark dens is a girl who fights for her survival and also the maintenance of a man who manages her life. In general terms, Neusa Sueli's costumes play a fundamental role in the visual representation of her life and in contextualizing the decadent atmosphere of the environment in which she is located, reflecting her profession and the environment in which she lives. She may wear sensuous but worn and faded clothing, symbolizing the difficult and exploitative nature of her life. This also contributes to conveying the dark and realistic atmosphere of the play.
