Abstract

This book takes us on a significant historical journey in Paraíba, spanning almost three centuries. During this time, the region underwent social, political and religious transformations. On August 2, 1585, the Portuguese captain João Tavares arrived in the Royal Captaincy of Paraíba. He signed a pact with the Tabajara chief Pirajibe against his Potiguara enemies, marking the beginning of the founding of João Pessoa. In addition, the book explores the arrival of the first bishop in Paraíba, a crucial event for understanding the development of the Catholic Church in the region. The author investigates the influence of the Catholic Church on Paraíba society throughout these centuries, including catechesis, sacraments, religious festivals and popular devotion.
