Abstract

This teaching case presents the story of two businessmen, Alberto and Maria, both of whom underwent an inspection that changed the course of their company, the “AutoParts and Services” workshop, as their accountant reported to both of them a possible inspection that would occur. in several companies in the town of Portal and nearby cities and that from this point on, they would have to wait for this event. Thus, Alberto and Maria began to wait for this inspection for at least 1 year, and finally in 2018 the inspection arrived, through SEMA (Secretariat of the Environment), the environmental secretariat linked to the state city hall and this was represented by the then engineer named Jorge, who introduced himself and explained that the workshop would undergo an investigation of compliance with some state and federal standards and laws and that the objective was to bring more socio-environmental responsibility to local companies. Therefore, after investigating the workshop and Jorge's opinion, Alberto and Maria are given a deadline to organize and regularize some things in the workshop, namely: a) completely paving the floor of the workshop courtyard; b) organize a selective collection system for garbage and waste from the workshop; and finally, c) install an oil filtration system, to prevent the water discarded by the workshop from being contaminated by the oil and going to the sewage system. Given the above, Alberto and Maria discuss how these inspections are carried out “out of nowhere”, taking many business owners by surprise, mainly because they lack information on the subject and many continued to work without the necessary changes and perhaps even without have never undergone this inspection. Thus, after research, budgets, and application of the changes highlighted by the SEMA engineer, Alberto and Maria were awaiting new inspection from the secretariat. However, after reflecting that it was time to maintain sustainability practices in the business, they were faced with the situation of how to deal with employee resistance in implementing and maintaining such actions in the company's daily life?
