Piancó na passagem da coluna Prestes (1926) : disputas na historiografia

Abstract

The passage of the Prestes Column through the city of Piancó in 1926 was a very significant episode in the history of Paraíba and remains a subject of controversy to this day. This study seeks to understand this event by analyzing the state and local political context, as well as the different interpretations produced about it. In this sense, the research emphasizes the importance of the Column as a nationwide tenentista movement, led by Luís Carlos Prestes and Miguel Costa, which questioned the prevailing oligarchic order but encountered significant resistance upon arriving in the hinterlands of Paraíba, especially due to the actions of Father Aristides Ferreira da Cruz as the “defender” of Piancó. Thus, the study dialogues with different historiographical readings, such as the works of Cavalcanti (2004) and Prestes (2006), demonstrating that the narratives surrounding the death of Father Aristides and the presence of the Column in Piancó were shaped both by ideological disputes and regional political interests. Therefore, rather than simply discussing the facts, this work questions how historiography has constructed different versions of the event, revealing that the passage of the Prestes Column through Piancó should be understood not only as an armed confrontation, but as a political, social, and symbolic phenomenon that remains alive in the memory and identity of the city and deserves further study.
