Abstract: Fertilization dramatically influence the growth of crops, and the castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) in a culture highly demanding high levels of fertility and soil organic matter. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of boron levels, cattle manure and use of mulch on the vegetative growth of castor bean. The experiment was conducted under field conditions from March to November 2010 at the Experimental Farm Cha-de-Jardim, owned by UFPB / CCA. We used a randomized block experiment in 4x3x2 factorial scheme (four doses of boron, three levels of organic matter in the presence or absence of mulch, with four replications. The rates of cattle manure, 0.0; 10.0 and 20.0 Mg ha-1 were applied directly into the pits one month before planting. It was the variety planted castor BRS - Energy spaced 1.0 x 1.0 m. The levels of boron were applied: 0.0; 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 kg ha-1 B as boric acid (17% B) and were applied during sowing of the crop. After thinning (7 days after emergence) was placed The mulch consists of crushed sugar cane equivalent to 10.0 Mg ha-1 in total area. We evaluated the insertion height of the main raceme, stem diameter, number of leaves and photosynthetic active leaf area culture at 15 and 150 days after sowing. The results showed that the interactions between boron and boron-manure-mulch, promoted a significant effect on the cultivation of castor beans. The application of 2.1 kg ha-1 of boron , 20.0 Mg ha-1 manure plus 10.0 Mg ha-1 bagasse cane sugar as mulch provided better results in growth in culture.
