O Espetáculo da Evolução: A Arquitetura do Teatro no Nordeste do Brasil, 1850-1930

Abstract

This research can be included in a context of studies about the theatre’s architecture in the northeast of Brazil, considering it as a registry, which helps to tell part of the history of this building and the local architecture. For this, it has as object of study the theatres built in northeast capitals of the country, in the period between 1850 and 1930, with focus on three architectural examples. The center of discussion is the study, characterization and evolutionary record, based on historiographic and typological attributes of the plant of the theatre building, in agreement with the materials and styles used in these buildings too – an approach which contributes to preserve its memory. The first methodological step was the literature review and survey of theatres that fit within the temporal and spatial clipping. In the next step, the systematization of the data was based on categories of classification of buildings, framing them into three groups with criteria of choices that better summarize the characteristics that would highlight the most emblematic examples representing each model of the theater building found in the Northeast. Then, the main sources became the Santa Isabel Theatre, José de Alencar Theatre and Park Theatre with their historical and typologicals contexts. As a result, it was possible to illustrate the permanencies and transformations to prove the desire for an adequate European building, the italian model, for other climatic building for this country's region, called “garden-theatres” models.
