dc.description.abstractThe aim of this work is to analyze in the short story “The legacy” (1958), by the English writer Virginia Woolf, the female representation through the main character, Angela Clandon, in the context of her marriage to Gilbert Clandon. Thus, a brief review of the critical fortune regarding Virginia Woolf and his writings was prepared based on texts by Oliveira (2017) and Prather (2005). To develop the concept of female condition, we take as a base the studies of Moreira (2003). In order to discuss female authorship, we will present texts by the writers Gloria Anzaldúa (1981), Alice Walker (1972) and Virginia Woolf (2014). Therefore, a brief analysis of this main female character will be made considering her relationship with the other characters in the plot: her husband Gilbert Clandon, her employee and friend Sissy Miller and Miller’s brother, identified only by the initials B.M. Finally, from the analysis of this short story, it is possible to conclude Angela was subjected to her marriage, which silenced her and led her to write diaries, and that was the only place where she had her voice truly expressed.pt_BR

dc.description.resumoO objetivo deste trabalho é analisar no conto “O legado” (1958), da escritora inglesa Virginia Woolf, a representação feminina através da personagem principal, Angela Clandon, no âmbito do seu casamento com Gilbert Clandon. Sendo assim, uma breve revisão da fortuna crítica a respeito de Virginia Woolf e seus escritos foi elaborada a partir de textos de Oliveira (2017) e Prather (2005). Para trabalhar o conceito de condição feminina, tomaremos como base os estudos de Moreira (2003). Para falar sobre autoria feminina, contaremos com as escritoras Gloria Anzaldúa (1981), Alice Walker (1972) e Virginia Woolf (2014). Para tanto, será feita uma breve análise da personagem principal do conto, considerando seu relacionamento com os demais personagens da trama: seu esposo Gilbert Clandon, sua funcionária e amiga Sissy Miller e o irmão desta, identificado apenas pelas iniciais B.M. Por fim, a partir da análise desse conto é possível concluir que a condição a que Angela Clandon estava submetida no casamento, de silenciamento em casa, a levou à escrita de diários, pois era a partir da escrita que ela conseguia se expressar e ser ela mesma.pt_BR
