MEMÓRIA E RESISTÊNCIA: HISTÓRIA DE VIDA DE INTEGRANTES LEIGOS E RELIGIOSOS NO COMBATE A DITADURA CIVIL-MILITAR NA PARAÍBA (1964-1985)

Abstract

The main objective of this work is to understand how the participation of members of the Catholic Church of Paraíba, men and women, religious and non-religious, took place, no fight against the 1964 military coup in the state. To this end, they were used as sources of books and articles referring to the time frame of our research (1964-1985), as well as those declared during the term of PIVIC 2019/2020. From the Historiography on Catholic Church and Military Dictatorship and the theoretical framework of Political History, it was possible to identify a militant role linked to the Catholic Church of Paraíba in the fight against the Military Regime. The oral reports of our interviewees were able to show the important role of religious activists, men and women, who contributed to the resistance process. As a result of the study, they point out that the Paraiba Catholic Church did not have any resistance to the Dictatorship since the arrival of Dom José Maria Pires in 1966, when it began to manifest itself against the arbitrariness carried out by the State and, from from his new philosophy, he also began to fight with marginalized populations, both in the countryside and in the city, for their incorporated rights to housing and work with the support of the Ecclesial Base Communities and their Pastorals.
