ANGLICISMOS EM LEGENDAS: O CASO DE BREAKING BAD

Abstract

For a long time, Brazilian Portuguese has incorporated words from other languages into its vocabulary. Currently, with the help of globalization, the borrowing of foreign words takes place through new audiovisual media. One of the media that promote this type of access is the streaming services, which offer a range of audiovisual content, such as movies and TV series. Considering that most of these contents are in English and there is a need for subtitles for the receiving language, sometimes the translation of words is compromised, making its translation impossible and forcing its use in original spelling. Therefore, the present work aims to analyze how the uses of anglicisms in the Brazilian Portuguese subtitles of the American TV series Breaking Bad happen. For this, a qualitative-descriptive analysis was carried out, in which we selected and analyzed the anglicisms present in the subtitles of the five seasons of Breaking Bad, theoretically based on the studies by Birdman (2001) about the types of foreignisms adapted to anglicisms. At the end of this work, the results showed that among the Anglicisms collected, most of them are classified as incorporation and that even those that have a translation or Portuguese adaptation are written in English.
