Abstract

The present research entitled: The role of the social worker in a teachinghospital is the result of observations from the Supervised Compulsory Internship I in Social Work in the Medical Clinic of the Lauro Wanderley University Hospital. Thus, the lack of knowledge of the real competences and attributions of the social worker before the multiprofessional team of the sector became noticeable. The general objective of this study is to discuss the role of the social worker in the healthcare social-occupational space. As specific objectives we listed: to present the historical and current elements of the Brazilian health policy; to demonstrate Social Service in the health area and, finally, to describe the internship experience in a teaching hospital. The relevance of this study was due to the attempt to denaturalize the idea that the Social Service professional can do almost "everything" and meet indistinct demands.Regarding methodology, we characterized it as a theoreticalresearch, with bibliographic and documental basis, and predominantly, with a qualitative perspective of analysis.This work was based on secondary sources, such as books, scientific articles, electronic documents, etc. This research allowed the expansion of the discussion in question, through the point of view of several scholars on the theme addressed.This monograph is composed of three chapters, subdivided into two topics each. These, in turn, sought to contemplate the intended objectives of the research. In general lines, we understand about the contradiction that exists between the ethical principles of Social Service and the Brazilian health area immersed in the ultraneoliberal dictates of the capitalist system, which destroys social rights. The profession has suffered modifications throughout its history, according to the various socioeconomic and political conjunctures. The health policy was andisinvolved in two antagonistic social projects of health: the sanitary reform, consistent with the Constitution of 1988, and the privatist project, imposed by the neoliberal governments. We verified that Social Service is placed in the intermediation of the capital x labor relation, and that there is a specific challenge to be discussed, that many professionals from other categories do not understand the real attributions and competences of the Social Worker and, finally, we understand the importance of the supervised internship experience, especially in a teaching hospital. It is worth pointing out that this experience contributed to my future professional performance, as it provided the approximation of theory with practice.
