Abstract

The present study aimed to analyze the performance of children pre-readers and beginning readers in a syllabic segmentation task. To analyze the performance was considered the child’s answer (hit / error) and reaction time for the task. Regarding syllabic segmentation task three variables were considered: word length, regularity and frequency of the word in the vocabulary word child. To understand the relationship between racing and targeting properties of syllabic word test was used for predictors of Reading Skills (THPL), computerized version. This instrument enables the analysis of the individual child's performance, item by item, and considers the degree of difficulty of the item from the properties of the word (length, frequency and regularity). For effective research we selected two independent samples, using the technique of non probability sampling for convenience, in a total of 155 children with an average age of five years and three months. It is noteworthy that were observed all ethical precepts of the National Council of Health (Brazil). The data obtained with the THPL were analyzed by descriptive and inferential. The results revealed low performance syllabic segmentation in both groups considered: beginning readers and pre-readers, however there were differences - between the two groups - the hyphenation based on the ownership of the word: frequency. Also, novice students in reading and pre-readers differ in reaction time as a function of the properties of words (length, frequency and regularity). The results also showed a significant relationship between the properties of words (length and regularity) and segmentation performance (measured by reaction time). This research contributed to the understanding of the construct of syllabic segmentation, bringing theoretical reflections and inspired new lines of research.
