Teoria da polidez e estratégias de preservação das faces: uma análise em orgulho e preconceito, de Jane Austen

Abstract

This work brings an analysis of excerpt from the literary work Pride and prejudice, of authorship of Jane Austen, in light of Politeness theory. We have, with the analysis the aim of observe the use or breach of these strategies of politeness, developed in the theory, verifying mainly what this use or breach of these strategies can reveal about the characters, their social situation and the conflicts faced by them. For this purpose we presented the politeness theory to our reader. Developed in the Pragmatic field, it has prominence the authors Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson (1987). We bring them according to the following scholars: Joan Cutting (2008); George Yule (1996); Anne O’Keeffe, Brian Clancy e Svenja Adolphs (2011). We started our work in a wide way bringing a brief report of studies in language, passing by the concepts of Pragmatics and the concept adopted in this work, we define models of contexts and we discourse about its importance in the Pragmatics. For this, it was realized an extensive bibliographic research in the areas mentioned above, whose the authors is going to be introduced soon in our introduction. The qualitative and interpretative analysis from the excerpts proposed observed that there is standard in the behavior presented by the characters, namely, in the female protagonist, character who appears in delicate situations and face to people who were in a social status considered higher to her, in the most of time use the Politeness strategies. The male characters, who are in a greater social prestige situation, do less or any of these strategies. We are going to see in the work the implication of these affirmations.
