Alfabetização de crianças cegas no ensino regular de João Pessoa

Abstract

In this final paper, I present the main issues surrounding inclusive education and, in particular, the literacy of blind children and their participation in mainstream education in the city of João Pessoa (PB). The general aim of the study is to discuss the use of the Braille system in the literacy process of blind children in the municipal school system of João Pessoa. We studied various authors who discuss the literacy of blind children in Braille and we also tried to listen to students and former students of the pedagogy course to find out if their training provided knowledge about visual impairment and the Braille system. As a methodology, we conducted interviews with three teachers from a regular school in the municipality of João Pessoa that receives blind students, in an attempt to understand what their work was like. The interviewees' reports showed that the teachers believe that braille is very interesting and even praise the agility of blind students in reading and writing braille. Some have mastered the method, not least because they learned it at the Institute for the Blind, but they don't always use it in their classrooms, because the school doesn't have a braille printer and the support of the Institute for the Blind is indispensable. By carrying out this research, I hope to help awaken in new educators the curiosity and desire to deepen their knowledge of special education, especially in relation to the braille system, so that they can help blind children and adults, not just in reading and writing, but in the development of the most diverse daily activities. I also hope that there will be ongoing inclusive training and that teachers will be able to learn how to use the Braille system, so that blind children can be truly literate and develop fully in school and in society.
