Abstract

This work is the product of interesting readings taken during a research PIBIC / CNPq2, concerning the epistolary gender in newspapers from Paraiba. It‟s aim is to understand the place of this gender in the nineteenth century, especially in the newspapers of this period. Therefore, trailing the historical concept of literature concept, it‟s role and the importance of letters in that century, we have observed the proposed requirements in epistolography manuals of that time. We have tried understand the historical moment in Paraiba, through the letters published in the journals of the nineteenth century, using for that reason, the newspaper The Opinion, from Paraíba that is the focus of our study. Therefore, we tried using this research to establish the relationship of the historical and literary context in the nineteenth century epistolary productions. For this, we use the studies of Almeida (1978), Mello (1995), Abreu (2003), Tin (2005), Barbosa (2007, 2010), Silva (2009) and Zappone & Wielewicki (2009).
