Prática de retelling - literatura na aula de língua inglesa através de duas adaptações de Hamlet

Abstract

The discussions that circulate about the necessity and importance of adaptations of literary texts are extensive and lead to different spheres. The clash over what is original work and copy only ceases when it is understood that adapting is a way of retelling a story. However, one of the categories discussed is the audience for whom these adaptations are directed, for example, the children. Since there are so many classic texts adapted for young readers, we wonder what the purpose of these adaptations is and how the target reader understands them. Thus, using the theories of adaptation (HUTCHEON, 2011; STAM, 2006, CARVALHO, 2006) for the benefit of bringing literature to children in the English language classroom, it is the purpose of this paper to observe how the process of adaptation of a classic text, in a classroom of a language school of the public system, through a retelling technique. This process involved the use of two adaptations of Hamlet's play by English author William Shakespeare, a prose by Usborne Collections (2012) and the film animation The Lion King (1994), with the aim of creating a retelling cycle. The work led to the production of a retelling titled Batman's Revenge, in which students were able to rebuild the content seen during the project. Finally, we analyze how children absorb classical literature through adapted texts and improve their knowledge in the foreign language.
