PERSPECTIVAS DE ESTUDO DA POLIDEZ LINGUÍSTICA

Abstract

Politeness is an aspect present in everyday social interactions, as a phenomenon that governs the uses and behaviors of individuals. Based on a literature review, this paper seeks to present the ideas present in the most widespread works in this theoretical field, and thus approach the subject from a contrastive basic view of the concepts proposed by some selected authors (Robin Lakoff; Geoffrey Leech; Bruce Fraser and William Nolen; Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson; Catherine Kerbrat-Orecchioni), which surround the seminal studies of politeness, systematizing the presentation of their lines of thought, pointing out the similarities and differences in their approaches, as well as the way in which each of them deals with issues related to the subject, thus building a comparative overview of the main concepts that govern the different lines of approach to politeness studies within the area of linguistics. The research allows us to conclude that the authors propose theoretical approaches that present discrepancies when it comes to the treatment of politeness in relation to issues that deal with the presentation of the phenomenon, linguistic constructions and manifestations, but agree that linguistic politeness is necessary for effective communication and responsible for maintaining relationships, as well as that the first studies on the subject allowed for the continuity and development of later studies.
