O papel social do bibliotecário na Biblioteca Prisional do Presídio Desembargador Flósculo da Nóbrega na cidade de João Pessoa

Abstract

Specialized libraries initially arise with the aim of serving courses linked to the areas of medicine and law. Over the years, they become institutions that play a crucial role in the dissemination, organization and storage of knowledge in specific fields, with a social role focused on the specific needs of a diverse audience such as researchers, professionals and students. The purpose of this document is to analyze the challenges and obstacles faced by librarians in carrying out their social role in the prison libraries of João Pessoa and the contributions of this professional to the rehabilitation and reduction of criminal recidivism. This is a bibliographic and documentary research, using a qualitative-quantitative approach. The research location is the prison library of the Desembargador Flósculo da Nóbrega Prison – Roger in the city of João Pessoa - PB within the prison universe. Three semi-structured questionnaires will be used as a data collection instrument. The questionnaires were applied to three different groups of subjects who are part of the universe of that prison. The results indicate that there is a job market that has not yet been explored by librarians within the prison environment, and that it urgently needs the attention of all bodies representing the class, so that they can mobilize with the Federal and State Governments and request measures to to enforce what is already defined by law, which is the insertion of the librarian in prison libraries. We also identified that prison libraries lack the work carried out by a librarian, in terms of organization, encouraging reading, development of the collection in a sustainable way, and that they are committed to seeking new tools that improve the quality of the service offered to those users. With this, it is concluded that the Prison Library is a tool for the rehabilitation of inmates that has not received due importance, and that despite its existence being regulated by federal law, greater attention is needed from governments in the administration of prison libraries, making it necessary to include the librarian, who is an information professional with social characteristics, concerned with the recovery of those people who experience human degradation as a result of their incarceration.
