Dois irmãos/the brothers : uma análise da tradução da obra de Milton Hatoum para a língua inglesa

Abstract

When translated, a literary work involves much more than the notions of linguistic equivalence, for there are several aspects that guide a translation, going from the choice of the text to the choice of cover elements. With this in mind, we propose in this research to analyse The Brothers (2003), the English translation of the Brazilian novel Dois irmãos (Milton Hatoum, 2000), and how the cultural aspects are presented to the target reader through paratextual elements (Genette, 2002; Torres, 2011) and also through cultural-specific items as proposed by Aixelá, (2013), which are words whose meanings refer only to their place of origin, loaded with great cultural value, foreign to the target culture. Thus, we understand that The Brothers is a translation that seeks to present Brazilian culture to the target audience, maintaining words in the original language, adding a glossary to explain them.
