| Resumo: | O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar como o romance Mary Barton (1848), da escritora inglesa Elizabeth Gaskell, representa a situação da classe trabalhadora durante a Revolução Industrial e as soluções propostas para as problemáticas sociais. Para essa análise de caráter bibliográfico, adota-se a perspectiva da crítica literária marxista e da literatura como representação, fundamentando-se em autores como Karl Marx, Friederich Engels, Terry Eagleton, Raymond Williams, Roger Chartier e Edward P. Thompson. Por fim, essa pesquisa busca também evidenciar a relevância do uso da Literatura como fonte histórica para a compreensão dos dilemas e contradições sociais na Inglaterra oitocentista. |
| Abstract: | The present study aims to analyze how Mary Barton (1848), by the English writer Elizabeth Gaskell, portrays the condition of the working class during the Industrial Revolution and the solutions proposed for social problems. This bibliographical research adopts the perspective of Marxist literary criticism and literature as representation, drawing on authors such as Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Terry Eagleton, Raymond Williams, Roger Chartier, and Edward P. Thompson. Ultimately, the study highlights the relevance of literature as a historical source for understanding the social contradictions and dilemmas of nineteenth-century England. |
