Condições artesãs : tendências disposicionais e trajetórias sociais de artesãos paraibanos

Abstract

This work seeks to deepen the understanding of artisan conditions in Paraíba based on the analysis of how the social trajectories of the arts in Paraíba operate in the formation of dispositions that structure their ways of living, working and positioning themselves in crafts in the contemporary scenario. To this end, this study is based on the so-called dispositionalist sociology of Pierre Bourdieu (1989; 1994; 1996) and Bernard Lahire (2004; 2010), especially with regard to the notion of “dispositions” as an instrument with the potential to achieve an understanding of the contexts of the artisan community based on the dimensions of meanings and logics attributed to the actions of those researched, including their variations. In methodological terms, a research used the qualitative method, with the application of four in- depth interviews with artisans, among them, a master, a master and two artisans, whose profile represents, mostly women, self-declared mixed race or black, two from the interior region and two from the metropolitan region of João Pessoa, between the ages of 40-70 years, held within the scope of the 37th edition of the Salão do Artesanato Paraibano, in addition to observations and field notes, which helped to compose the analysis. As a result, it was possible to perceive a rural, interior origin, with little access to education and the transfer of artisanal knowledge in the family trajectory of the artisans, marked by dispositions oriented towards the value of work as central. On the other hand, investigations on an individual scale allowed me to identify differences that were invisible from afar: ways in which the habits incorporated by the arts and their updates, depending on the vivid contexts, are expressed in “stronger” or “weaker” ways, such as the desire to survive from crafts as the main source of income; practice popular knowledge or adapt to contemporary logic and seek recognition and visibility.
