Pode o SNI correr o risco de ser colocado no banco de réus?: a vigilância do Serviço Nacional de Informações sobre a imprensa do estado de Pernambuco (1979-1988)

Abstract

The 1970s and 80s were the stage for the political distension that put Brazil on the path to redemocratization. It starts from the problematic of how the authoritarian power in the final years of the military regime, disguised as flexible, moved to silence the contradictory and guarantee continuities. Thus, this work aims to elucidate the performance of the National Information Service, created in 1964 and responsible for the State's information and intelligence activities, and its intense surveillance of the Pernambuco press between the years 1979-1988. From a theoretical-methodological point of view, it is situated in the field of New Political History in dialogue with Cultural History, using the concept of political culture (Berstein; Sirinelli, 1998). Through a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the dossiers produced by the Recife Agency, the objective is to understand the logic of the SNI's production in that context, as well as to understand how journalists and newspapers were portrayed by the agency and what the objectives of its agents were between the lines of these documents. In comparison with the testimonies of Pernambuco journalists, the complexity of the relationship between the press and the Military Regime and the projects in dispute in the "slow, safe and gradual" political opening is demonstrated.
