Bibliotecas escolares nos Centros Municipais de Educação Infantil (CMEIs) da cidade de João Pessoa, Paraíba

Abstract

Despite the legal backing that ensures the school library as an essential component of the educational process, its effective presence in educational institutions is not yet a consolidated reality. The problem lies in the gap between legislation and school practice, while the central issue is understanding to what extent legal guarantees have translated into real conditions for access to reading, information, and the formation of readers in the educational space from early childhood onwards. Therefore, this research investigates the existence of libraries and the role of librarians in the Municipal Early Childhood Education Centers of João Pessoa. It is characterized as exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative approach, developed through bibliographic and documentary research in official sources, such as data from the Municipal Department of Education, legislation, institutional documents, and indirect observation. The results show that, although the municipality has a significant network of services for early childhood education, there is no information on the existence of structured libraries and the role of librarians in these units. The results confirm that there is a gap in the inclusion of libraries and librarians in early childhood education, indicating the need to strengthen public policies aimed at implementing these spaces and professional practice, in order to contribute to the formation of readers from the earliest years of life.
