Discurso, identidade e Nordeste: uma análise dos verbetes paraíba e baiano em dicionários de língua portuguesa

Abstract

This monograph consists of the analysis of the paraíba and bahian in dictionaries of different epochs, tracing their effects of meaning over time. In their attempt to crystallize meanings, the dictionaries bring words produced in different production conditions, which causes them to gain new contours in the course of historical time. As far as the paraíba is concerned, these contours go through a simple geographic belonging, to a sense that causes the stereotyping of the social position of the northeastern and promotes the stigmatization of the femininity of northeastern women. In the same way, the bahian entry is also described by stereotypes, mainly, of Bahia laziness. The objective was to analyze, through the definitions present in the dictionaries, discursive memories that support these statements, attesting its historical construction. Observing the way in which these meanings were constructed and conveyed by the dictionaries, this research points to the historicity of the discourse that includes the northeastern and feminine minority. In order to achieve the mentioned objectives, this research consists in the cataloging of the paraíba and bahian through consultations with the main libraries of João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba. Dictionaries produced at different moments of history were analyzed, more precisely those of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. This research had the theoretical contribution of Discourse Analysis, making use of its tools to describe and interpret the utterance, as well as to perceive its effects of meaning.
