O TOM DO CORVO: POR UMA FILOSOFIA DA TRADUÇÃO NO CÉLEBRE POEMA DE EDGAR ALLAN POE

Abstract

This final paper, inserted in the Translation Studies area, in the Commented Translation sub-area, aims to present the commented translation of a fragment of Edgar Allan Poe's “The Raven”, in which the refrain “nevermore” will be our starting point, in a discussion about the extension of the vowels. Focusing on the melancholic tone of the poem, we approached the essay “The Philosophy of Composition” (1846), where the author himself details his writing process, in order to claim, in this specific context, a systematically isomorphic solution, which we called “a Philosophy of Translation”. Through this commented translation, we also aim to discuss the notion of retranslation, especially drawing on the studies of Álvaro Faleiros (2009, 2013), and to explore the fact that “The Raven” has become “the most translated poem of the world” (VITORIANO, GOMES, KUNZ, 2017). In order to justify our theoretical perspective, we used the notions of “transformation” by Walter Benjamin (2008) and “re-creation”/“transcreation” by Haroldo de Campos (2015). Among the results of the research, the translated fragment that we have produced shows a dimension of the poem by Edgar Allan Poe that has not yet been widely explored, especially because of a “translation tradition” that insists on using vowels that are not producible. With this research, we hope to help other researchers and translators to bethink on the importance of retranslation in the context of an already widely translated poem.
