Silas Marner, de Geroge Eliot: uma leitura à luz da ecocrítica.

Abstract

The Nineteenth Century was a very important period to England in terms of economy, politics and society due to the Industrial Revolution, because it was when there was a paradigm rupture of the relationship between man and environment. It was such a profound rupture that its resonance echoes in literary texts. Having this in mind, it is time to establish the objective of this work, which aims at analysing the novel Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe, written by George Eliot and published in 1861, under the perspective of Ecocriticism. Our concern towards this material is based on our perception that George Eliot follows a realistic pattern in her writings, but keeps intrinsic bonds with the romantic poet William Wordsworth. Silas Marner moves within these two literary spheres: Romanticism and Realism. The concept used in this research approaches the theme modelled by an Ecocriticism analysis, that investigates the literary text and its relation between man and environment. To attain our goal, this work was developed according to the ecocriticism theoretical studies finding in Guattari (2012), Williams (2012), Garrard (2006), Gotfelty (1996) e Capra (1982). Thus, our work proposes to show how George Eliot writes her novel from a realistic approach and, simultaneously, is able to present bucolical traces from the Romanticism, what may awake her readers to the consciousness that the relationship between man and nature may pervade the inner transformations of the individual.
