Abstract

The science laboratory is an excellent space that functions as a methodological tool to facilitate the teaching of Science and Biology. In this space, students leave the traditional classroom and are able to relate theory to practice. In addition, students use mater ials, handle equipment, and witness natural phenomena and organisms. Within this perspective, the main objective of this work is to verify if the public schools of João Pessoa have a laboratory of functional sciences and biology and how the teachers make u se of this space. The laboratories were examined through questionnaires with managers and teachers in six public schools, three of which were municipal and three were state schools. Only three of the schools surveyed were found to have a laboratory, two st ate schools and one municipal school. Teachers reported that the greatest difficulties in using this space are related to the lack of consumer material, electronic equipment, inadequate infrastructure, large number of students per class, lack of technical support responsible for the laboratory and lack of continuing education. In the schools that did not present this space, the teachers reported that they find it very difficult to perform experimentation with students due to the lack of this environment and when they do, they elaborate demonstratively and in practical classes take students to external areas of the classroom and the materials used are of their own consumption. It is concluded that there is a need for effort from school management, teachers and public agencies to use the science laboratory, but it is worth noting that it makes no sense for schools to acquire materials / equipment if teachers do not use the laboratory, it would be and is a waste of resources.
