| Título: | PROTAGONISMO E EXISTÊNCIA LÉSBICA NOS QUADRINHOS ESTADUNIDENSES: UMA ANÁLISE DE DYKES TO WATCH OUT FOR, DE ALISON BECHDEL |

| Resumo: | Produções culturais como a literatura, o cinema e a ficção seriada funcionam como importantes ferramentas de produção e reprodução de valores, conceitos, preconceitos e estereótipos. No caso específico da representação de mulheres lésbicas nesses contextos, existe ainda um movimento de invisibilização muito forte, concomitante a uma representação que por vezes pretende limitar suas escolhas, sua afetividade, seus desejos, suas identidades. Partindo de um contexto de combate ao apagamento de mulheres lésbicas na literatura e da promoção de maior e melhor representatividade de mulheres lésbicas, especialmente nos quadrinhos, o presente trabalho pretende analisar a representação de mulheres lésbicas na série em quadrinhos Dykes to Watch Out For, da artista estadunidense Alison Bechdel, a partir de excertos selecionados do livro The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For (2008). Para tanto, apresenta-se um breve histórico da representação lésbica no universo dos quadrinhos estadunidenses, com foco em tiras de jornal, histórias em quadrinhos e novelas gráficas que apresentem mulheres lésbicas enquanto protagonistas. Posteriormente, são apresentados os conceitos de heterossexualidade compulsória, existência lésbica e continuum lésbico (RICH, 1980), das noções de interseccionalidade (CRENSHAW, 1989) e lugar de fala (RIBEIRO, 2019), além da leitura de uma base teórica para a análise dos elementos específicos dos quadrinhos enquanto linguagem (EISNER, 2010; MCCLOUD, 2005), que constituem a fundamentação teórica desse trabalho. A análise lida com a série Dykes to Watch Out For enquanto obra social e politicamente relevante, investigando a representação da experiência lésbica através das diversas personagens retratadas por Bechdel, culminando em uma análise mais pontual de um dos núcleos principais da série, formado pelas personagens Sparrow, Lois e Ginger, a partir de quatro tirinhas extraídas do livro The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For (2008). Os resultados da análise revelam como um dos efeitos de sentido da representação dessas três personagens a concepção da identidade lésbica como complexa identidade lésbica como complexa e diversa, atravessada por diversos outros eixos identitários e impossível de ser compreendida em termos estáveis ou permanentes. |
| Abstract: | Cultural productions such as literature, cinema and serial fiction work as important tools for the production and reproduction of values, concepts, prejudices and stereotypes. There is still a very strong invisibility surrounding the representation of lesbian women in these contexts, alongside with a representation that tends to limit their choices, their feelings, their desires, their identities. From a context of fighting the erasure of lesbian women in literature and promoting greater and better representation of lesbian women, especially in comics, this work aims to analyze the representation of lesbian women in the comic series Dykes to Watch Out For, from American artist Alison Bechdel, based on selected excerpts from the book The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For (2008). To this end, it presents a brief historic background of lesbian representation in the realm of American comics, with a focus on comic strips, comic books and graphic novels that feature lesbian women as protagonists. Subsequently, the concepts of compulsory heterosexuality, lesbian existence and lesbian continuum (RICH, 1980), as well as the notions of intersectionality (CRENSHAW, 1989) and social standpoint (RIBEIRO, 2019) are presented, in addition to a theoretical base of the elements involved in comics as a language (EISNER, 2010; MCCLOUD, 2005), all which created the theoretical foundation of this work. The series Dykes to Watch Out For is perceived as socially and politically relevant through the investigating of lesbian representation in the diverse characters portrayed by Bechdel. A more punctual analysis is presented concerning one of the main cores of the series, consisted of the characters Sparrow, Lois and Ginger, based on four strips taken from the book The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For (2008). The results of the analysis reveal how the representation of these three women demonstrates the author’s intention to conceive a complex and diverse lesbian identity, pierced by several other axes of identity and consequently impossible to be understood through stable or permanent terms |
