A IMPORTÂNCIA DO MA: UMA ANÁLISE DO VAZIO NA OBRA CHÃO DE PEIXES, DE LÚCIA HIRATSUKA

Abstract

A blank page in the middle of a reading can be a cause for surprise, confusion or error, so this work is dedicated to investigating the importance of these pages and empty spaces in children's Picture Books. This bibliographical research aims to analyze the importance of the Japanese aesthetic of emptiness in the illustrations in the book Chão de Peixes (2018), by writer and illustrator Lúcia Hiratsuka, in order to explain how this phenomenon expands the reading experience. Therefore, the specific objectives unfold in conceptualizing Ma so that one can identify it in different artistic expressions and in children's literature; contextualizing the professional trajectory of Lúcia Hiratsuka and describing the technique chosen by the author to illustrate the work under analysis; and, finally, analyzing the emptiness in the research corpus, approaching the text and illustrations of the book. For this, we rely on the theoretical support of some authors who are dedicated to studying these issues, such as Michiko Okano (2007; 2014), Linden (2011), Lee (2012), among others. As a result, we realized, therefore, how important it is to understand the presence of emptiness in children's book illustrations and how it can take the reader beyond what is represented on paper. In this sense, we realize that purposeful blank spaces manifest themselves as key elements in the work that carries them in its composition
