Melancolia e Solidão em Frankenstein, ou o Prometeu Moderno

Abstract

This work aims to analyze Frankenstein: or the Modern Prometheus (1818), authored by the English writer Mary Shelley. We intend to understand it under a different perspective, having as central point the relations between melancholy and literature, assigning our investigative focus to the creature of Dr. Frankenstein. We will seek, therefore, to analyze the representation of the isolated, lonely and displaced subject from the world based on their actions, as well as the reasons that caused these actions in the creator and in his creature. Thus, we will take as reference the works of Soares (2015), Dantas (2019), Starobinski (2016) and Freud ([1917] 2010) among others. With the publication of Frankenstein in 1818, Mary Shelley manages to unite in her work several themes that attract readers not only for the fictionality, but also for the density of the psychological content of her narrative. The creature is the result of the ambitious experiments of young scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein who, seized by the dark desire to reanimate dead matter and prove that the silence of the tomb can be broken, goes against the natural order of life and awakens his abominable creature, whose consequences will lead him to a terrible misfortune.
