Abstract

Seeking a re-signification of what the identity and experience of being a Chicana/Chicano in the USA, the Chicana/Chicano Movement (El Movimiento) emerges, which with its ramifications in various fields, such as literature, emerges The House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, establishing a portrait of the Chicana/Chicano community through the lens of a narrator in the process of self-discovery, criticizing the context of inequality bequeathed to the people. As a distinctive element of this community, language presents itself as an identity marker, presenting phenomena of contact between languages, such as code-switching. Emphasizing the phenomenon, this work aims to explain, account, categorize and trace an interpretative path to group them through (DABENE & MOORE, 1995) who categorize them according to their positions. In order to achieve the objective of this research, an identity, historical and cultural perspective (HALL, 2006, ALANIZ & CORNISH, 2008) and a sociolinguistic perspective (SPOLSKY,1998, BAGNO, 2007) were used as a theoretical basis. It allows the interpretation of different aspects of the Chicana/Chicano community through linguistic phenomena. The corpus is constituted (DABENE & MOORE, 1995), (Torres, 2007) and (SPOLSKY, 1998). The objective is to establish a link between linguistic and semantic characteristics and narrative choices provided through the work, seeking to interpret them in a way that makes sense of their real uses. The results showed that the code-switching phenomena, although difficult to interpret, have particular characteristics that refer to the identity of the Chicana/Chicano community.
