Desafios na leitura e compreensão da língua inglesa

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the challenges in reading and understanding texts in English to 3rd year students in a Public School in the city of João Pessoa – PB, with specific objectives, such as outlining the profile of the students; identify the sources of reading used by the students and describe the strengths and weaknesses of students' reading and comprehension of texts. The research is characterized as descriptive and exploratory and as na instrument of research questionnaire was used and for data analysis the quantitative and qualitative approaches were used. The sample consisted of 31 students from the 3rd year of high school in the Professional Center Deputy Antônio Cabral - CPDAC in the city of João Pessoa - PB. The data indicate that the majority of students in the 3rd year of high school in the group studied are female, with ages ranging from 16 to 18 years, and the majority, 93%, do not exercise paid activity. The data show that most of the students (73%) have difficulty interpreting the text and pronounce the words correctly in English, preferring to read through the cellphone and printed material and emphasize as a strong point the issue of pronunciation in English, or You can read. However, they demonstrate how weak point they can not understand and interpret texts in English. It is concluded that in order to improve the reading and interpretation of text in English, teachers need to re-evaluate their methodology for teaching this subject, taking into account the difficulties of both parties (teacher and student).
