Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between musical theory and instrumental practice in the context of Banda Marcial Machado de Assis, in João Pessoa/PB. The work is based on research carried out between August 2022 and May 2023, with the aim of understanding how music theory classes are articulated with instrumental teaching in the Banda Marcial Machado de Assis project. The methodology used to obtain the results of this study was a field research in the context of the band, fundamentally composed of an interview with the conductor of the band and classes applied to the students, in addition to bibliographical research in the field of music education. The main results of the research point out that the relationship between musical theory and instrumental practice in the context of the Band stand out and positions that maintain this relationship with a focus on the practical dimension. The students perceived this relationship as something important, but they did not show interest in theory activities in the band's day-to-day, something also perceived by the conductor. The maestro also perceives this position and reinforces that the Band's objectives transcend technical or theoretical training, focusing on social dimensions and the maintenance and motivation of students to remain in the group and in musical practices.
