A História de uma hora: uma leitura feminista de Kate Chopin

Abstract

This work aims to analyze the short story "The Story of an Hour ‖, into a feminist perspective and specific objectives: to analyze the representation of women through the character Mrs. Mallard from the point of view of gender studies, we will emphasize further the presence of irony in the outcome of the narrative. Kate Chopin's literature puts her as pioneer in the tradition of female authorship literature, anticipating some themes and strategies that will reflect the feminist movement in literature years later. It was also carried out, a bibliographic research where we pointed out some specialized authors in the Feminist Studies such as Marina Colassanti (1977), Virgínia Woolf (2004), Michele Perrot (2013), Elaine Showalter (1979). An analysis of the story was done as well, taking into consideration some of the definitions of what has been defined as Feminist Literature, emphasysing the importance of the characters of Brentley Mallard and Louise Mallard. Finally the figure of Irony was used , as an strategy of resistance, with the theoretical support of de Mueke (1995), Nietszche (2005) e Camila Silva Alavarce (2009).Through this study we could see clearly some of the feminist themes and the presence of a female character which are going to represent pioneerism in the Feminist issues.
