AS VOZES TRANSGRESSORAS DE MULHERES NEGRAS EM “JUMPING MONKEY HILL”, DE CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE

Abstract

The aim of this monograph is to analyze the transgressive female voices in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's short story “Jumping Monkey Hill”, looking at how the black female characters use their voices to break the silencing that has been imposed on them and their ancestors since the colonial period. Thus, this study looks at how the so-called Orient is shaped by a Western vision and how this vision contributed to the expansion of the European colonial system. Based on this discussion, the research identifies some characteristics of colonialism and patriarchy, which perpetuate a hyper-sexualized, exotic, and dehumanized image of black women. The work is also based on Black Feminist theoretical-critical pillars, from the perspective of important black women intellectuals such as bell hooks, Patricia Hill Collins, Oyeronke Oyewumi, Grada Kilomba, and Djamila Ribeiro, weaving a path to Chimamanda Adichie and her transgressive writing. By traversing elements of Adichie's short story, this study highlights how the construction of black female characters illustrates the use of voice (and writing) in processes of female agency and empowerment.
