REFLEXÕES SOBRE A MATERNIDADE EM ALICE MUNRO E PEDRO ALMODÓVAR

Abstract

The present work aims to analyze how motherhood is experienced in Alice Munro’s short stories, “Chance”, “Soon” and “Silence”, found in the book Runaway (2017), and in Pedro Almodóvar’s film, Julieta (2016), inspired in the stories. For the development of the work, theoretical support was sought in the conceptions of motherhood adopted by contemporary feminists Adrienne Rich, Elizabeth Badinter and Simone de Beauvoir, who offer different ways of approaching the topic. The authors share the influence of the patriarchal system in imposing the role of women in raising children, to the detriment of the responsibilities of fathers. Considering that in the filmic transposition of the stories there is a transfer from Canada to Spain, and from the sixties to the eighties, Almodóvar resorts to recontextualizing the plot according to Spanish culture. Thus, we discuss the transcultural adaptation according to Linda Hutcheon. Given this, we found that the protagonists Juliet (short stories) and Julieta (film) represent motherhood in different ways, as result mainly from the influence of cultural aspects referring to different nationalities.
